  1. Environmental Problems and Preservation Efforts in Africa

  2. Environmental Problems Air Pollution Water Pollution Deforestation Desertification Loss of Soil Fertility Loss of Biodiversity

  3. Air Pollution A large amount of air pollution in Africa is caused near mining and industrial areas Many of the people of Africa are not educated in the consequences and dangers of air pollution 90% of the electricity in Africa is generated from coal combustion The air pollution can be up to 10-30 times the WHO (World Health Organization) limit in some regions.

  4. Water Pollution Much of the water pollution in caused by a lack of laws and regulations set by the government Many mining companies allow many toxic elements to seep into the soil and streams. Water pollution is also caused by abandoned mines, untreated sewage, and contaminated surface water. This picture above is from a river near a gold mine near Johannesburg

  5. Deforestation Africa contributes to 17% of the worlds forest. .7% of forest in Africa is cut down each year. Rainfall is reduced because of deforestation, it increases the ground temperature which affects the formation of clouds. It is due to a large logging economy and the clearing of land for use in farms or pastures.

  6. Desertification A potential idea to stop desertification is to plant alarge area of trees 9 miles wide and 4,831 miles longcalled the great green wall. It is designed to help to stop or slow down desertification. Desertification affects 40% of Africa. Desertification is mainly caused by overgrazing and agriculture activities.

  7. Loss of soil fertility 80% of farmland in sub-Saharan Africa is severely degraded. Factors contributing to loss of soil fertility: Farmers often grow crops in an area until the soil is no longer fertile then move to a new area. farmers often plant the same crop year after year, taking all of the nutrients while giving nothing. Many farmers do not have access to fertilizers.

  8. Loss of biodiversity Many of the factors relating to a loss of biodiversity are related to the fact that there aren’t many laws preventing hunting. There are few rules that protect the environments of rare species. Pollution also destroys the environments of animals and makes many of the animals sick. Invasive species that come from other countries can drive species to extinction. Many fishers overfish to support themselves financially.

  9. Preservation Efforts Flora and Fauna Many private companies and organizations work to bring back endangered species. There is a ban on hunting for ivory, this helps Elephants but harms Hippos. Africa also has many anti poaching laws set up to protect the natural wildlife.
