  1. CLASSES OF MATTER VOCABULARY

  2. Element – A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means

  3. Compound – A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined.

  4. Mixture – Two or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined.

  5. Heterogeneous mixture – A mixture that does not appear to be the same throughout (“least” mixed)

  6. Homogeneous mixture – A mixture so evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts (“well” mixed)

  7. Solution – a homogeneous mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another substance (“best” mixed)

  8. Solute – the substance that is dissolved; the substance there is less of

  9. Solvent – the substance that does the dissolving; the substance there is more of

  10. Tincture – a solution in which alcohol is the solvent

  11. Solubility – maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a definite amount of solvent at a specific temperature

  12. Unsaturated – solutions that contain less solute than it can possibly hold at a given temperature

  13. Supersaturated – a solution that is made to hold more solute at a given temperature than is normal

  14. Suspensions – a heterogeneous mixture in which the solute particles are temporarily suspended, but will eventually settle out

  15. Colloids – a homogeneous mixture that is not a true solution; the solute particles are kept permanently suspended.
