  1. Chapters 1-3 As you read, notice the qualities of the society (Utopia) in which Jonas (or Kiri) lives. Keep a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Jonas’s (Kiri’s) society with the way you live.

  2. Chapters 4-6 As you read today, notice the author’s tone. Think of adjectives to describe it, then select a few passages that are evidence to the tone description.

  3. Chapters 7-9 Describe the characterization of the protagonist. Use passages from today’s reading as you consider: S-Speech T-Thoughts E-Effect on others A- Actions L- Looks

  4. Chapters 10-12 Bildungsroman- a type of novel concerned with the education, development, and maturing of a young protagonist. Why is the novel that you are reading considered a bildungsroman? Give examples from today’s chapters.

  5. Chapters 13-15 Based on your readings thus far, make predictions on what you think might happen to the protagonist.

  6. Chapters 16-18 As you read, consider everyone’s role in the novel’s fictional society. How does everyone’s role work together for the function of the community?

  7. Chapter 19(you will do this, too GB readers) Write your response to today’s reading for your entry today. How do you feel now that you know what “release” means- especially the “release of a Newchild.”

  8. Chapter 20 G- Write about Rosemary. Who is Rosemary and what was the author’s purpose for inserting this character? What might it foreshadow? GB- What do you predict to be the strange sound Kira heard? What could this mean for her? What might it foreshadow?

  9. End of Book Would it be best to stay in the community or leave? Why or why not?
