  1. Lesson 3: Inequalities in Education

  2. Objectives • I will list the factors that lead to inequalities in education • I will identify the six goals of Education for All Note: You’ll see the following pencil when a slide is connected with your PoP Student Workbook.

  3. Vocabulary • Education for All: Education for All contains six goals established by the United Nations to achieve education for all the world’s children by 2015. These goals support the second and third Millennium Development Goals.

  4. Quick Write • How do you think you would be affected if you were never able to go to school? Don’t just think about money…think about your health, networks/friends, etc. When you’re finished, share your thoughts!

  5. The major statistic 75 million children are not attending school world wide

  6. The 6 EFA goals • “Expand early childhood care and education” • “Provide free and compulsory primary education for all” • “Promote learning and life skills for young people and adults” • “Increase adult literacy by 50 per cent” • “Achieve gender parity by 2005, gender equality by 2015” • “Improve the quality of education”

  7. Factors that stop kids from going to school… • Unable to pay for school supplies or transportation • School is too far from home and may be in dangerous area • Culture does not support girls going to school • Children need to be working • Improper sanitation or meals at school • Teachers do not have consistent attendance • Schools do not have proper supplies or facilities • Unfair treatment of certain students based upon their culture • Language barriers between teachers and students Can you think of any other factors as a class?

  8. Meet Jose Jose lives in a remote village along with his mother, father and 3 siblings. Because he is the oldest, he has had to take charge of helping his father with farm work and other labor. His parents believe that his time will be better spent near his family rather than in school. His two younger brothers have the opportunity to attend school and are taken every day by older children who live nearby. His family can only afford the supplies for their two youngest children. The school they attend is four miles away. When Jose grows up, he wants to be a business owner.

  9. Meet Ketsana Ketsana lives in a small village along with her father and 2 younger siblings. Her mother passed away after giving birth to her youngest sibling. Ketsana is 11 and has never attended school, but is now attending night school after her teacher managed to convince her father to allow her to attend with other village girls. Ketsana is the oldest student in her class and is sometimes made fun of by other children because of her age. When Ketsana grows up, she hopes to become a teacher Read other children’s stories by visiting: http://www.campaignforeducation.org/en/why-education-for-all/real-lives/

  10. Discussion Questions • What surprised you or interested you the most about what you learned? • What factors lead to inequalities in education? • How do people contribute to perpetuating those inequalities? What can be done to fix those inequalities?

  11. Group Work Along with your teacher, identify a class project that can be done to inform others in your school or community about the global education crisis or about Pencils of Promise. Teachers: Please see the last two sections of the “Social Activist Guide” to get ideas.
