  1. SUMMARY OF NCAR OCEAN MODELING ACTIVITIES Gokhan Danabasoglu (NCAR) • A new version of the ocean model (in CCSM4): • POP2 base code, including many infrastructure changes, • Increased vertical resolution (60-levels) and changes in bottom topography, • Ferrari et al. (2008) near-surface eddy flux parameterization as implemented by Danabasoglu et al. (2008), (CPT) • Upper-ocean enhancement and deep-ocean reduction of both isopycnal and thickness diffusivity coefficients (Danabasoglu and Marshall 2007), (CPT) • Fox-Kemper et al. (2008a) submesoscale mixing parameterization (Fox-Kemper et al. 2008b), (CPT) • A parameterization for deep channel and shelf, i.e., open-ocean, overflows (Danabasoglu et al. 2009; Briegleb et al. 2009 – both in prep.), (CPT)

  2. Simmons et al. (2004) tidal mixing scheme (Jayne 2009), • Modified anisotropic horizontal viscosity scheme (Jochum et al. 2008), • Horizontally-varying internal wave breaking, i.e., background, vertical diffusivity / viscosity (Jochum 2009), • Zenith angle dependent diurnal cycle of solar forcing, • Passive tracer infrastructure and prognostic ecosystem model, • Many additional diagnostics. • The CORE version 2 NYF and IAF data sets have been finalized and released through the GFDL web site. • We have been continuing with our investigations of decadal variability and associated predictability with a focus on the North Atlantic multi-decadal variability as depicted in the Atlantic MOC. • A set of ocean-only, ocean—sea-ice coupled and fully coupled simulations have been completed with a global 0.1o ocean model.

  3. ATLANTIC MERIDIONAL OVERTURNING CIRCULATION (Sv) Ocean-only control Ocean-only w/ overflows Coupled control Coupled w/ overflows Denmark Strait and Faroe Bank Channel overflows are parameterized.

  4. TEMPERATURE (oC) AND SALINITY (psu) AT 2414 m - DEPTH

  5. TEMPERATURE (oC) AND SALINITY (psu) AT 409 m - DEPTH
