  10. The First Crusade, 1096-1147 • Crusaders left WE, August 1096 • 12,000 of the original 30,000 crusaders reached Jerusalem June 1099 • captured Jerusalem and controlled it for 50 years • Muslims took it back • Christians never regained Jerusalem

  11. The First Crusade • On July 15, 1099 the Crusaders went over the city walls and unleashed unbridled carnage • Blood reportedly ran knee-deep • 70,000 Muslims were slaughtered • Jews gathered in a synagogue for safety and were burned alive
