WHIWH Working Principles • Informed decisions about healthcare require accessible culturally appropriate information • Recognize that our work must be based on accurate bias free research pertaining to the specific health concerns of Racialized Women • Recognize that multiple oppressions intersect to impact on the health of women

  3. Community Based Research • Gains strength from collective action to eliminate oppression • Challenges Inequalities • Promotes Social Change • Develops knowledge and skills for communities • Develops awareness of systemic causes of social problems • Establishing new forms of supports and networks

  4. Bridging Academic and Community Based Research • Being held accountable to a community • Subject as expert as opposed to the Researcher • Community member / Researcher • Taking from acommunity requires giving back

  5. Addressing the Challenge? • Majority of research focuses on immigrants themselves rather than their impact on Canadian Society. • Support the important contribution of CBR in promoting health equity

  6. Addressing the Challenge? • Support and act as a bridge for collaborative research partnerships • Assist in the development of communities of research practice • Promote knowledge transfer and exchange activities • Improve access to training and skills development for staff of community based organization and Researchers who wish to engage with communities
