  2. What does the immune system do? • Protects against disease • It identifies, then kills pathogens and tumor cells.

  3. What’s the Big Idea? • The immune system is a very complex system and goes into a lot of depth • This system fights off millions of biological and chemical threats on a daily basis and ensures our survival

  5. Terms to know before we begin… • Antigens- attack antibodies and make them less effective • Pathogens-cause harm and illness by attacking cells • Antibodies- blood protein that is specified to attack a specific antigen

  6. What’s it composed of? • Specialized Cells • Proteins • Tissues • Organs

  7. How does it work? • Your WBC’s (also called leukocytes) are formed in your bone marrow, which specialize into lymphocytes. These lymphocytes specialize into “T-Cells” and “B-Cells” • These cells work together to fight off foreign substances. The “T-Cells” subdivide and these cells keep the balance by amplifying production of “B-Cells” and the decrease of this production to maintain homeostasis (a constant state)

  8. Important Organs and Tissues • Spleen • Lymph • Lymph Nodes • Bone Marrow • Leukocytes (WBC’s) • Lymphocytes • Neutrophils • Basophils • Monocytes • Phagocytes • “T-Cells” • “B-Cells” • Thymus Gland

  9. How Does it Connect? Your Immune system connects with all of your body’s systems and works to keep a certain state of homeostasis.

  10. Here are some ways to remember this stuff! “T” stands for Thymus (which is where the “T-Cells” mature) -The T cells subdivide into 4 parts. “B” stands for Bone Marrow (where most of the “B-Cell” maturation takes place)
