  2. BEFORE TEACHING LISTENING • Establish • The purpose of the task • The listening skills to be practiced • The level of the learner • Vocabulary needed to understand the listening • How to generate interest in the listening text • A low affective filter where students are comfortable listening

  3. 4 PURPOSES OF LISTENING • 1. Listening for understanding • The big idea • 2. Listening for specific information • Example: time, place • 3. Listening to establish a context • Where, When, Who • 4. Listening for later discussions • Later dialogue, sharing information

  4. What we can teach - Skills • Students need to learn • 1) Strategies that they can use to help themselves • 2) Appropriate vocabulary for the context • 3) Self-confidence in tackling listening tasks

  5. Preparing a Listening lesson • Warm-up – establishing context – activating prior knowledge • Vocabulary for both predicting content and comprehending it. • Establish a task. • Listen more than once. • Let students work together to build understanding.
