MRI: Acquisition of a Material Testing System for Research and Educational Training in Static and Dynamic Characterization of Advanced Structural NanocompositesMahesh Hosur, Tuskegee University, DMR 0722859 Flexure Characterization of Nanoclay Infused Epoxy Nanocomposites Epoxy composites with 1-3 weight percentage of nanoclay loading were fabricated. Samples were exposed to elevated temperature, moisture and cold conditions for 90 days respectively. 3-point bend flexure tests were carried out using MTS 809 Testing Machine at a crosshead speed of 1.2 Results of the study indicate that the infusion of nanoclay in the system provides barrier to environmental conditions and thus results in less degradation of properties in comparison to neat composites (without nanoclay) as shown in Figure at the right. Test Standard: ASTM D790-02

MRI: Acquisition of a Material Testing System for Research and Educational Training in Static and Dynamic Characterization of Advanced Structural Nanocomposites Mahesh Hosur, Tuskegee University, DMR 0722859 Research and Education Training Several graduate students were trained to use the MTS Hydraulic System for various tests such as flexure, compression, ILSS etc. These system is used extensively for almost all PhD, master’s and undergraduate students in their research. The results obtained from the system has been instrumental in their thesis resulted in 8 journal articles, several conference publications and presentations. REU and REH students conducted lab experiments during summer outreach program. Prof. Hosur in a training session with graduate students Erica Nelums, Mechanical Engg. undergraduate student working on sample preparation. Dr, Moore (2010) PhD graduate helping REH-high school student in summer 2010.
