  3. Overview Remedial English and Mathematics Instruction, Placement, and Support Resources

  4. Remedial English • ENGL 0103 BASIC COMPOSITION SKILLS, (Remedial/Developmental Course) -Introduces students to and provides practice in reading, writing, and interpretation. Intended for students whose experiences as writers have not prepared them for ENGL 0113. Attention to the development of language skills is integrated into the course's primary emphasis upon essay writing. Required for entering students who score below 16 on the ACT English test and for adult students who score below 65 on the CPT Sentence Skills test. Individual conferences are arranged as needed. Does not satisfy degree requirement for any degree program at Cameron University. Lecture 3 hours. • ENGL 0113 DEVELOPMENTAL WRITING,(Remedial/Developmental Course) - Provides practice in reading, writing and interpretation for students whose experiences as writers have not prepared them for ENGL 1113. Attention to the development of language skills is integrated into the course's primary emphasis on essay writing. Required for entering students who score greater than 15 but less than 19 on the ACT English test and for adult students who score greater than 64 but less than 96 on the CPT Sentence Skills test. Individual conferences are arranged as needed. Does not satisfy any degree requirement for any degree program at Cameron University. Lecture 3 hours.

  6. Remedial Mathematics • MATH 0013 PRE-ALGEBRA, (Remedial/Developmental Course) - This course provides a solid foundation in whole and signed number operations, fractions, decimals and percent. Does not satisfy any requirements for any degree program at Cameron University. Students who have unsuccessfully attempted this course two or more times are required to co-enroll in MATH 0121. Lecture 3 hours. • MATH 0103 BEGINNING ALGEBRA, (Remedial/Developmental Course) - This course is an introduction to algebra. Topics covered include introduction to the real number system, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, arithmetic operations using polynomials, factoring, and simplifying rational expressions. Does not satisfy any requirements for any degree program at Cameron University. Students who have unsuccessfully attempted this course two or more times are required to coenroll in MATH 0121. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisite: MATH 0013 or satisfactory placement score.

  7. Remedial Mathematics • MATH 0115 BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, (Remedial/Developmental Course) - A combined beginning and intermediate algebra course. This course is designed for students who are able to cover the material in both beginning and intermediate algebra in one semester. Does not satisfy any requirements for any degree program at Cameron University. Students who have unsuccessfully attempted this course two or more times are required to co-enroll in MATH 0121. Lecture 5 hours. Prerequisite: MATH 0013 or satisfactory placement score. • MATH 0213 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, (Remedial/Developmental Course) - This course is designed to help students develop the skills needed for general education courses. Topics include radical and rational exponents, inequalities, quadratics, complex numbers, and an introduction to functions. Does not satisfy any requirements for any degree program at Cameron University. Students who have unsuccessfully attempted this course two or more times are required to co-enroll in MATH 0121. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisite: MATH 0103 or satisfactory placement score.

Center for Writers • Full-time Director, Full-time Assistant Director, and four Part-time Consultants • Provides help to understand an assignment, narrow a topic, develop a thesis, improve a draft, or polish essays. • Free for enrolled students. Students are helped on a first-come, first-served basis • http://www.cameron.edu/writing_center/staffservices.html • Mathematics Tutoring Lab • Full-time Director and 5 Student Workers • Provides help for students enrolled in MATH 0013 (Pre-Algebra) through MATH 2713 (Elementary Calculus). • Free for enrolled students. Overview of Activities affecting Remedial Education • Early Alert • Funded by OSRHE in Fall 2004 for implementation in Fall 2005 • Faculty members enter information about students who have attendance problems and/or performance problems • Communications are sent to students based on level and type of comment (email, letter, telephone, visit) • Review of Placement Scores • In Fall 2006, university placement scores in math and English were reviewed and updated to align with the guidelines from Accuplacer and ACT • As a result of this review, a new Pre-Algebra course was developed to accommodate those students entering the university with the greatest deficiencies in mathematics.

Paired Courses in Remedial English and Remedial Math • Implemented Fall 2009 • Students enrolled in pair courses took both remedial classes with the same cohort of students and stayed in the same room in back to back sessions for the classes • Success of the initiative was measured by the percent of A, B, and C’s earned as well as retention rates of students enrolled in paired courses • Paired courses in mathematics and English were not offered after Spring 2011. • Midterm Grades • Started in Fall 2010 for all students enrolled in sixteen week classes at the remedial and 1000-level • Midterm grades are used for counseling purposes and are not recorded on the permanent record of any student Overview of Activities affecting Remedial Education

Administrative Withdrawals • Implemented in Spring 2010 for academic performance in remedial courses • Instructors may request an AW for students for non-attendance • Expanded to include all courses in Summer 2010 • Twelve-week format courses in Mathematics and English • Implemented in Fall 2010 • Start in week 5 of a 16 week semester • Provided for students whose placement was not indicative of skill level Overview of Activities affecting Remedial Education

  14. Mandatory Tutoring • Implemented in Spring 2010 • Students who have not successfully completed a specific remedial course in math or English after two or more attempts are required to enroll. Overview of Activities affecting Remedial Education

  15. Mandatory Tutoring Courses • ENGL 0111 COLLEGE WRITING SKILLS, (Remedial/Developmental Course) -Supplemental instruction in college writing skills under direction of Writing Center staff. Students must be concurrently enrolled in ENGL 0103 Basic Composition Skills or ENGL 0113 Developmental Writing. Does not satisfy any degree requirement for any degree program at Cameron University. • MATH 0121 BASIC MATH SKILLS, (Remedial/Developmental Course) - This course is a supplemental developmental course providing an individualized plan of study to practice mathematical skills under the direction of the Mathematics Laboratory staff. Students who are enrolled in this course must be concurrently enrolled in MATH 0013, MATH 0103, MATH 0115, or MATH 0213. Does not satisfy any degree requirements for any degree program at Cameron University.

  16. Mandatory Tutoring – Policies and Procedures • ENGL 0111 and MATH 0121 are graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. • Each student is required to schedule a regular time to meet with his or her tutor for one hour every week for the entire semester. • If a student misses more than one tutoring session without rescheduling and completing the missed session before the next scheduled session, the student receives a “U” for the tutoring course. • If a student misses more than three sessions with his or her tutor without prior rescheduling, then the student is administratively withdrawn from both the mandatory tutoring course and the remedial course.
