  3. ICREP – the young days Is ICREP lost in shadows of smoke of wood stoves and clouds of biogas? NO – founded by Wim Hulscher in the VOK of THT in April 1983 - 25 founding participants • The early adopters in THT and ITC included : Joy Clancy, Enno Hommes, Mike McCall, Fred Paats, Margaret Skutsch, Huub Stassen, Willem vd Toorn, & too many others to mention • & the cheerleaders included Klaas Jan Beek, Henk Luning, Dirk Feil, and Paul Hassing

  4. Appropriate Technologies Mainly a review of technologies available for improved rural energy efficiency & effectiveness.

  5. Anchellius THT / UT provided the technology overview, ITC the economic and social context Anchellius brought it all together – a mythical – and paradise – island which needed to have a new integrated energy plan every year!

  6. RETS • But not just a technology tour / • The frame was the famous ETS – ‘Energy Technology System’ which included so much: hardware alternatives, economic appraisal, EIA, social impacts, gender factors, institutional capacity, delivery systems, spatial …..

Travel Management • Meanwhile the staff and participants the energy hotspots of The Netherlands – windfarms, biogas plants in pig farms, keukenhof, delta works, the un-tropical beaches. • There was a downside: The carbon footprint we generated – in those days – no email, no internet, but kilos of handouts and files to carry home on the flights

  9. Family Planning The course always had a very happy family life – alumni around world ….. As with families, there were offspring, planned and unplanned! • a book for the EEC/ EU • a major programme of courses at ESAMI in Arusha and around Africa • short course in Bangkok and Kathmandu & ??. • Alumni picked up the ball and ran with it – developing own courses in India, Peru, Thailand

  10. In the 1990s, changes …. Core finding from DGIS dropped, so still many applicants , but few participants. The core business of energy technologies faded and rural energy planning took front place. “if you cant do, then plan” ?? ITC became much more involved – 1 of ITC’s first MSc specialisations was in Rural Energy & Development, and graduated about 30 MSc’s over the 1900’s. Thus, spatial analysis, integrated land use planning, energy modelling

  11. New faces and places • The UT – TSD MSc course in Energy and Environment was added to the sauce & brings new ideas and continuity • The course location has moved into ITC – facilities, accommodation, a multi-culti student environment, friendly faces

  12. Where from ??

  13. Upscaling the energy discourse ICREP experimented with different specialisations – forestry, ETS, - and interest fell away. There was a change in scale in the energy issues and the analysis, though the practical local focus of the course always remained. We recognised the demand for Proposal writing, Project management

  14. Climate Change & Kyoto impacts And so we came into the climate field. Initially, a module on climate change Then a real niche in the market for practical training: writing PINs and PDDs for CDM projects (Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol)

  15. The future??? If these are the Drivers: • population growth & accelerating urbanisation • climate change & its uncertainties • globalisation in all its economic & political & cultural faces Then these are training & research areas – the Impacts for energy issues • urban energy footprints in the region • health, energy and climate change • the contradictions of biofuels • REDD (natural forest management and mismanagement) as a prime financial force in post Kyoto carbon mechanisms
