  1. Introduction to the review R. LOSITO CERN - AB/ATB 14 – 02 – 2008

  2. Reviewers • Dr Friedrich Groeschel (PSI) • Dr Hajo Heyck (PSI) • Dr Hartmut Venz (Nok) • Dr Irene Mailand (Nok) • Dr Paul Wright (RAL), offline… R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  3. Outline • Goals of the review • Programme of the review • Mandate for the reviewers R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  4. Goal of the review • Upgrade of the nTOF facility should allow beam on target on Oct. 1st, 2008 in safe conditions • Previous review clarified the constraints for the design of a new target: • Safety (cooling water, ventilation) • corrosion of Pb • mechanical stability • Several options were considered, but as from Dec. 2007 we concentrated our efforts on the design of a new target in pure Pb. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  5. Goal of the review • The objective to have beam on Oct. 1st is very ambitious. • Until the detailed design will be ready, difficult to give a serious opinion: the devil is in the detail!! • For the moment, still realistic on paper • Schedule will not be discussed in details in this review. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  6. Goal of the review • We addressed the three issues in the conceptual design that will be presented during the day • Status report: a reminder of the characteristics of the old facility, and a summary of the path to the new design • Physics goals: to provide the justification for the new facility and the physics specs for the target R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  7. Goal of the review • We addressed the three issues in the conceptual design that will be presented during the day • Neutronics: to satisfy physics goals & assess safety • Water chemistry: to justify our choice for materials • pure Pb (or Pb3Sb) • Stainless steel (possibly with low Co content) • Water chemistry: to provide a specification for maximum water speed (corrosion/erosion) R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  8. Goal of the review • We addressed the three issues in the conceptual design that will be presented during the day • Water cooling: to show that we can ensure low temperatures to • reduce the risk of corrosion at the surface of Pb • Reduce the risk of creep • Creep: a qualitative study and numerical simulations to keep it under control. • Cooling &ventilation: to provide information about technical and safety aspects of the foreseen installations. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  9. Goal of the review • We addressed the three issues in the conceptual design that will be presented during the day • Integration: to show that the new design is compatible with the existing installation and only “minor” modifications need to be done. This is essential to be able to install the target without accessing the tunnel no interference with the operation of the PS R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  10. Goal of the review • We addressed the three issues in the conceptual design that will be presented during the day • Risk Analysis: a preliminary presentation of all the safety aspects that are currently being analyzed. This work is done in close collaboration with the Safety unit in the AB Dep. and the CERN Safety Commission. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  11. Mandate for the reviewers • Is there any reason to modify our baseline? (Pure Pb, Stainless Steel, target cooled from above) • Are the basic assumptions (creep, material characteristics, radiolysis…) reasonable? • Did we overlook any aspect? • Is there any risk of encountering fundamental problems during construction of the target or operation of the facility? • Are safety aspects adequately addressed? R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  12. Mandate for the reviewers • We would appreciate a preliminary answer at the end of the day, after the discussion. • A final report should be prepared as soon as possible to allow the start of all purchasing procedures and detailed design. • Latest date to receive the report: • Friday, 22 february. • The review will be recorded to allow P. Wright to add his comments. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  13. Lunch, Coffee • Coffee is in the small room outside • A working lunch (sandwiches etc…) will be prepared in the coffee room at 12.30 to optimize the schedule. • A “Cantine” restaurant (usually very crowdy) is available at walking distance. R. Losito, Introduction to the review

  14. Acknowledgements • The talks presented today are the result of intense team work produced by several people and services at CERN and from Collaborating Institutes • The commitment shown is very encouraging for the continuation of the project • Thanks!!!! R. Losito, Introduction to the review
