  4. Matthew1:1-25history & Prophecy

  5. Matthew is very Jewish • Genealogy: • Begins w/ Abraham. • Based on David’s name: • Kingdom: - John the Baptist: Matthew 3:2. - Jesus Christ: Matthew 4:17. • Christ: no King, no Kingdom: • Who is to blame? Christ is totally legit! • Miracles. • Discourses. • Righteousness. • Prophecy! 7 major Old Testament prophecies. דוד דוד 4 +6+4 = 14

  6. What is Prophecy exactly? • Standard General Definition: “Thus saith the LORD.” ========== • Specially designated individual - prophet: • Designed for proclamation. • Direct Revelation (1st hand) v. preaching (2nd hand): • Not necessarily predictive Προ-φησι“prophesy” “before – speak” • When predictive, must come true (Deuteronomy 18:22)! • Has ceased w/ the completion of Scripture:

  7. History & ProphecyMatthew’s Approach • History: 1:1-20. • Prophecy: 1:21-25 • What is the point? ========== • God’s Prophecies are trustworthy: “When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him”Deuteronomy 18:22. • God’s prophecies come true literally: - God is omniscient & omnipotent. - Therefore, prophesy is not a special class of Scripture. - 100’s have come true literally already!

  8. History & ProphecyThe Prophetic Sections of Isaiah • Isaiah Chs. 1-39: Condemnation • Isaiah Chs. 40-66: Redemption. ========== God is unique when it comes to predictive prophesy: “I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, nor My praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, now I declare new things; before they spring forth I proclaim them to you” Isaiah 42:8-9.

  9. History & ProphecyThe Prophetic Sections of Isaiah • Isaiah Chs. 1-39: Condemnation • Isaiah Chs. 40-66: Redemption. ========== God is unique when it comes to predictive prophesy: “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the One who formed you from the womb, ‘I, the Lord, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself and spreading out the earth all alone, causing the omens of boasters to fail, making fools out of diviners, causing wise men to draw back and turning their knowledge into foolishness, confirming the word of His servant and performing the purpose of His messengers. It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’ and of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built.' And I will raise up her ruins again” Isaiah 44:24-26.

  10. History & ProphecyThe Prophetic Sections of Isaiah • Isaiah Chs. 1-39: Condemnation • Isaiah Chs. 40-66: Redemption. ========== God is unique when it comes to predictive prophesy: • “Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it”Isaiah 46:9-11.

  11. History & ProphecyThe Prophetic Sections of Isaiah • Isaiah Chs. 1-39: Condemnation • Isaiah Chs. 40-66: Redemption. ========== God is unique when it comes to predictive prophesy: “I declared the former things long ago and they went forth from My mouth, and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. Because I know that you are obstinateand your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead bronze, Therefore I declared them to you long ago, before they took place I proclaimed them to you, so that you would not say, ‘My idol has done them, and my graven image and my molten image have commanded them”Isaiah 48:3-5.

  12. What is God saying through Matthew? • If the unusual prophecy of the Virgin Birth came true: then . . . • All the other prophesies and promises in the Bible will surely follow: - Kingdom (land, King, people, Temple). - Salvation. - 2nd Coming.

  13. 5-Fold Son “Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet” Matthew 1:22. What does ‘this’ mean? ========== • Son of the Virgin Mary – Prophecy in motion • Son of Abraham – Promise of worldwide blessing • Son of David – Promise of earthly Kingdom • Son of God – Promise of perfect righteousness • Son of Man – Promise of blood sacrifice All will come literally true!

  14. Prophecies come true literally! “Much of the current debate over the Scriptures among believing Christians is, at its core, a result of failure on the part of evangelicals to come to terms with the issue of hermeneutics[rules of interpretation]” (Inerrancy, “Legitimate Hermeneutics,” 117).

  15. 4 Types of Prophecies/Promises • The Virgin Birth: • Worldwide blessing to Abraham: • Worldwide Kingdom to David: • Gospel Redemption through Christ:

  16. 1. The Virgin Birth: • History: • The ‘Book’ (1:1): contra John 8:41: “We were not born of fornication.” contra John 8:48: “You are a Samaritan and have demon.” • The Feminine ‘begeter’ (1:16): • The angelic pronouncement (1:20): • Prophecy:

  17. 1. The Virgin Birth: • History: • The ‘Book’ (1:1): contra John 8:41: “We were not born of fornication.” contra John 8:48: “You are a Samaritan and have demon.” • The Feminine ‘begeter’ (1:16): • The angelic pronouncement (1:20): • Prophecy: -Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” - Isaiah 7:13-14: “Listen now, O House of David . . . Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”

  18. 2. Worldwide Blessing to Abraham: • History: • “Seed of Abraham” (1:1): • The first ’14’ – Abraham to David (1:2-11): • Prophecy:

  19. 2. Worldwide Blesing to Abraham: • History: • “Seed of Abraham” (1:1): • The first ’14’ – Abraham to David (1:2-11): • Prophecy: - Genesis 22:18: “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” - Galatians 3:8: ”The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” - Galatians 3:16: Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. - Romans 4:13: “For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.”

  20. 3. Worldwide Kingdom to David: • History: • “Son of David” (1:1): • “Judah & his brothers” (1:2): • “David the King” (1:6): • The middle ’14’ – David to Jeconiah(1:6-11). • “Joseph, son of David” (1:20): • Prophecy:

  21. 3. Worldwide Kingdom to David: • “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” Genesis 22:16-18. ========== • “When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father and he shall be My son . . . I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever” 1 Chronicles 17:11-14.

  22. 3. Worldwide Kingdom to David: • “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; • and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end” Luke 1:32-33.

  23. 3. The Kingdom promises to David: • History: • ‘Son of David’ (1:1): • “Judah & his brothers” (1:2): • “David the King” (1:6): • The middle ’14’ – David to Jeconiah(1:6-11). • “Joseph, son of David” (1:20): • Prophecy: • Genesis 49:10: “The scepter shall not depart from Judah.” - 1 Chronicles 17:12-14: “and I will establish his throne forever . . . and his throne shall be established forever” - Micah 5:2: “As for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah . . . One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” - Zechariah 9:9: “Your king is coming to you . . . humble, and mounted on a donkey.” - Luke 1:32-33: “The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; . . . and His kingdom will have no end.” - Revelation 5:10: “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”

  24. 4. Gospel Redemption through Christ • History: • “The curse on Jeconiah” (1:11-12): “Thus says the Lord, ‘Write this man down childless, a man who will not prosper in his days; for no man of his descendants will prosper sitting on the throne of David or ruling again in Judah.’ ” Jeremiah 22:30. • The obscure last ’14’ – Jeconiah to Joseph (1:12-16): • The exile to Babylon – Kingdom lost (1:11-12): • The angelic Proclamation (1:21): • Prophecy:

  25. 4. Gospel Redemption through Christ • History: • “The curse on Jeconiah” (1:11-12): • The obscure last ’14’ – Jeconiah to Joseph (1:12-16): • The exile to Babylon – Kingdom lost (1:11-12): • The Angelic proclamation (1:22). • Prophecy: - Genesis 22:2: “Take now your son, your only son . . . go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.” - John 1:29: ”Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” - Matthew 1:1: ”The genealogy of Jesus Christ.” - Matthew 1:21: ”You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

  26. What does this all mean? • All things belong to you in Christ: “For all things belong to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God” 1 Corinthians 3:21-23. • You partake of all the Bible promises: “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise”Galatians 3:29.

  27. The Future is Determined • Israel rejected for now: “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” Matthew 10:5-6. • The Gentiles are included: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” Matthew 28:19. • Israel will return: “I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be?Romans 11:11-12. • The future Kingdom is literal: “. . . but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years” Revelation 20:6.
