This project focuses on a proactive system for disseminating new medical knowledge effectively to healthcare providers using semantics-enabled techniques. The system aims to promptly notify physicians about critical findings that could impact patient treatment. It leverages domain ontologies to process medical records and literature, matching and ranking relevant information to aid in decision-making. Research challenges include semantic processing of EMRs and scientific literature, match-making between records and publications, and scalability for processing large volumes of documents.

Semantics-Enabled Proactive and Targeted Dissemination of New Medical Knowledge Mustafa Nural, AsmitaRahman, PriyaWadrevu, ChinmayMurugkar I. Budak. Arpinar, LaksmishRamaswamy Computer Science Department The University of Georgia • Motivating Scenario • Mr. Smith has a heart attack history. He currently uses drugs Plavix and Prilosec for reducing heart attack risk and acid reflux. A recent discovery shows using two drugs together is actually doubling the risk of recurring heart attack. Mr. Smith’s doctor should be immediately notified to change the treatment regimen. • Challenges • Traditional information dissemination methods carry a significant delay. Of propagation • Useful information may be lost due to overload • Searching thorough medical records with each finding is not applicable • Approach • Process Medical Records & Literature using a Domain Ontology • Match & Rank potential findings with records • Present the results to the physician • Get feedback & update system • Research Challenges • Semantic Processing of EMRs & Medical Literature • Match-making between EMRs and Scientific Literature • Clustering of EMRs & Query Generation for Scalability Processing of the Documents
