  2. Analysis on carrier sense for only preamble of the frame Bin zhen, Huan-Bang Li and Ryuji Kohno

  3. Carrier sense for preamble Successful TX Unsuccessful TX a a 1-a preamble data preamble data data preamble data Y preamble Busy period Busy period Idle period

  4. Unsuccessful transmissions Unsuccessful TX1: data portion is corrupted by preamble Busy period a preamble data Y1 preamble data Unsuccessful TX2: synchronization is corrupted by data Busy period a preamble data Y2 preamble data

  5. Unsuccessful transmissions (cont.) Unsuccessful TX3: both data and preamble are corrupted due to propagation delay Busy period a preamble data Y3 preamble data preamble data Multiple preamble may be overlapped

  6. Throughput analysis • Assumption • Non-persistent non-slotted carrier sense for preamble only • No hidden node • Parameters • propagation delay: a • Data portion:ρ Successful transmission throughput Average idle duration Average busy duration

  7. Throughput analysis (cont.) No transmission occurs during 1) data portion of last frame 2) data portion of itself 3) propagation delay Contention duration due to propagation delay and data portion

  8. Typical network parameters • Propagation delay • 1e-4 (about 30m) • Data portion • 32 bytes • Short preamble case • 0.5 ms preamble duration • 1Mbps data • Medium preamble • 1ms preamble • 1Mbps data • Long preamble • 4ms • 0.1Mbps data

  9. Throughput Do carrier sense for all frame

  10. Frame delay and power

  11. Discussions • With carrier sense for preamble we only poor network performance • Maximal raw throughput for the three preamble is 0.26, 0.33 and 0.24. • In the best case, less throughput than slotted ALOHA • For WPAN, it is easy to reach >0.9 if we do not consider hidden node • Maximal throughput is achieved when offered traffic is 0.7 ~ 1. • Light loaded network. • Usually we can only load the network to 0.5 • More power consumption due to collision
