  1. Page Charges What you need to know and information of greater interest . . .

  2. Page Charges – What you need to know • Your co-authors need to know you will not be named on any page charge information (unless you want to pay the page charges) • You – or the corresponding author - must fill out the NRAO Publication Support form available via http://library.nrao.edu/pubsup.shtml

  3. Details of the Process • Submit the paper to your journal of choice (ensure it is an acceptable publisher by checking List of Predatory Publishers by J. Beall http://scholarlyoa.com/2014/01/02/list-of-predatory-publishers-2014/ • Post the preprint on arXiv • Submit the NRAO Publication Support form • If using a Grant to cover a portion of the page charges, use the notes field to provide the amount of coverage – as a percent of the total of page charges - desired on the Grant (or the total amount you want to be covered) • Also include the Grant Number and your permission to charge the noted percentage to your grant

  4. Details - Continued • The NRAO Publication Support form generates an email to the Observatory Librarian • The Observatory Librarian responds with the percent of coverage NRAO will provide; additional information may be requested (such as the NRAO acknowledgement or clarification needed for any aspect of support) • With the information provided by the Observatory Librarian, the corresponding author fills out the publisher’s page charge form (usually online) with the citation information and the percent of coverage provided by NRAO (or NRAO + Grant). The contact person for NRAO publication support is Marsha Bishop.

  5. Afterwards . . . • IOP Publishing (or any one of 3 dozen+ publishers) generates 1 (or more) invoice per paper • If everything is done correctly prior to this, the invoice is sent to the Library, verified, and the invoice number, date, and amount is entered into NRAOPapers • Invoices are bundled for Accounts Payable in GB with a spreadsheet listing invoices and amounts • Approved invoices are copied and sent, with the spreadsheet, to GB for payment

  6. Page Charges as Metrics • Collected page charge data provides the amount NRAO expends but can also be used to examine many different aspects of publication support such as • determining cost per page • calculating cost per citation • Examining the percent of NRAO publication support by organization or publisher
