  2. Definition of Proprioception • Joint position sense without visual input • Measurements help inform physical therapist of patient’s ability to determine limb location in space • Also helpful in determining whether therapy interventions are necessary

  3. Measurement of Proprioception • Blind fold individual • Place the limb into a test position • Hold in test position for a few seconds • Record angle of test position • Return to starting position • Patient places limb into the testing position • Record angle of repeated attempt

  5. Statement of Need • Device to isolate and measure internal and external rotation of shoulder joint • Must measure degrees similar to physical therapist’s goniometer • Test position must be self restraining (Locking)

Project Specifications • Isolation and measurement of shoulder internal and external rotation • Position of body - lying down on table • No computer technology • Easily used in a clinical setting • Portable and light • Measurement in degrees • Inexpensive • Test position must be self restraining (Locking)

  7. Design Constraints • Patient positioned lying on back • Shoulder blade must be immobilized • Upper arm positioned 90° to body • restrained • allowing longitudinal motion • in a resting position • Elbow must be positioned 90° to upper arm
