  1. Referencing and EndNote Web EBG-102 Introduction to referencing and Bibliographic software EndNote Web. Rebecca Kelleher Samantha Oakley

  2. Welcome During this session you will learn • Why referencing is important • When to reference • What details are needed for a correct reference • How EndNoteWeb software can be used to help organise and write references

  3. What is bibliographic referencing? When writing an assignment or dissertation your own thoughts and ideas build on those of other writers and researchers. It is essential that you acknowledge those sources of information by: • Acknowledging the source within the text. • Giving full details of each item in a reference list.

  5. Why do I need to do it? • To enable your lecturer to follow up the references and find the book or journal article in a library. • To enable your lecturer to check the accuracy of the information you’ve given. • To demonstrate to your lecturer that you have read widely a range of opinions. • To avoid plagiarism (using someone else’s ideas as your own.)

  6. Why do I need to do it? Referencing is a transferrable skill! • When writing a report, the reader can easily see where you obtained your information • Shows employers you can find quality information and evaluate its usefulness • Something to shout about on your CV

  7. Referencing styles There are many referencing styles. The one you are most likely to have seen is the footnote style: .........a new and gendered dimension to the findings of historians who have studied credit systems in the late seventeenth century.1 These themes provide further evidence, as Peter Earle reminded us several years ago, that the middling sorts were not inevitably rising at this time. 2 1. Peter Earle, The Making of the English Middle Class: Business, Society and Family Life in London, 1660-1730 (London: Methuen, 1989), pp. 106-23; Craig Muldrew, ‘Interpreting the market; the ethics of credit and community relations in early modern England’, Social History, 18 (1993), 163-83. 2. Earle, p. 333

  8. APA 6th The style the College of Business and Economics recommends for Undergraduates is APA 6th An Author-Date style similar to Harvard

  9. APA 6th What does it look like? Go to pdf

  10. Really? It looks fiddly. In short - Yes, it is! Be careful with your references. Every comma, full stop and use of italics is used for a specific reason. You can’t change the way it looks. Stick to the style and be consistent.

  11. In text citations In the text of your assignment you need to give the author(s) surname(s) , plus the year of publication, plus the page reference for a direct quote. Different ways to quote: In 2008 it was discovered (Jones)… Jones (2008) discovered that… Recent research (Jones, 2008; Brown, 2001)…

  12. Book references Czinkota, M., Ronkainen, I., Moffett, M., Marinova, S. and Marinov, M. (2009). International business. (European ed.). Chichester:Wiley. Malhotra, N. K. and Birks, D. F. (2007). Marketing research: an applied approach. (3rd. ed.). Harlow:FT Prentice Hall.

  13. Journal article reference Palmer, A. and Koenig-Lewis, N. (2011). The effects of pre-enrolment emotions and peer group interaction on students’ satisfaction. Journal of Marketing Management,27 (11/12), 1208-1213.

  14. Official publication (with a corporate author) National Audit Office. (2005). UK sport: supporting elite athletes. (House of Commons Papers HC 182; SE/2005/9). London: The Stationery Office. Retrieved 8th November 2012 from http://www.nao.org.uk/publications/nao_reports/04-05/0405182.pdf

  15. Tweets, blogs and other weird stuff Check out the APA blog at- http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/references/

  16. Get organised! • You’ve done your research, got your books, journal articles etc. • You need to think of how you’re going to keep track of all this stuff. • You may keep a notebook, use a Word document or something else.

  17. EndnoteWeb: what is it? • Web-based software • Use it to collect all the details of books and journals you’ve used for an assignment in one place • You can input manually or download from a library catalogue or database

  18. EndnoteWeb: why use it? • It will help you keep track of your references • It will help you to format your references correctly (order, punctuation, italics) • You can select the style you want – we recommend APA 6thfor Business & Economics assignments • You can use it with Word – “Cite while you write” – for instant bibliographies/reference lists!
