Enhancing Campus Security with Astra: A New Approach at the University of Texas at Brownsville

The University of Texas at Brownsville, located near the Mexican border, has implemented new security measures due to rising concerns over border violence and campus safety. All campus members must now submit an Astra facility request for after-hours or weekend facility access, enforced by the Office of Space Management with Provost approval. This policy, designed to assist Campus Police, ensures compliance and enhances safety. Despite initial resistance from faculty accustomed to unrestricted access, the initiative has strengthened security and improved emergency response on campus.

  2. The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College • Serves more than 15,000 students in the Brownsville metropolitan area and broader South Texas region. • Located on the border with Mexico (Matamoros, Tamaulipas).

  3. Campus Security Issues New campus security measures have been implemented as a result of : • Having the campus located right next to the Mexican border has resulted in border violence spilling over . • Recent nationwide campus shootings

New Security Measure The Office of Space Management implemented a new space security policy with the Provost’s approval. • All campus faculty, staff, and students are required to submit an Astra facility request if they plan to use any facility after hours (8 am – 5 pm) or weekends.This new policy assists Campus Police in determining who is on campus in order to help them when a risk arises.

  6. Campus Buy-in • It was not easy to obtain campus buy-in. Particular resistance came from faculty who were used to come and go without notifying anybody. • Campus Police is key in identifying those that are not complying. If a user is not listed on their daily reports, they are asked to leave campus. If a user failed to submit a request, I will receive an email or call from Campus Police for approval. I will review the request and then approve /deny it; however, I make sure to notify the user that they must submit a facility request next time.

  7. Campus Benefits • The campus has benefited from the new policy. 1) All users are complying 2) Campus Police can quickly assess who is on campus should an emergency arise.
