  2. The Burning Bush • Moses was born into difficult times (Ex. 1:1-22) • Moses was born to parents faithful to God (Ex. 2:1-10; Heb. 11:23)

  3. The Burning Bush • Moses grew up and took matters into his own hands (Ex. 2:11-15; Ac. 7:23-25) • Moses’ brethren needed help (Ex. 2:16-24), and Moses was called by God to help (Ex. 3:1-10)

  4. The Burning Bush • This is the same place where God reassured Elijah concerning his call to lead (1 Kings 19:8) • Moses went from being a prince, to a shepherd, to a law-giving leader

  5. Inferiority (3:11-12) Excuse #1 – “Who am I?, I’m not the right person for the job” • Unlike Isaiah (Isa. 6:8), Moses was not anxious to go • Unlike Samuel (1 Sam. 3:9), Moses was not willing to listen

  6. Inferiority (3:11-12) • Unlike Saul (Acts 26:19), Moses was not ready to obey • God’s response: reassurance (2 Cor. 4:7)

  7. Ignorance (3:13-22) Excuse #2 – “What will I say?, I won’t know what to say” • Moses was to speak only what was revealed to him (3:14)

  8. Ignorance (3:13-22) • God’s response: some will listen, others will not (Lk. 8:4-15)

  9. Infidelity (4:1-9) Excuse #3 – “What if they will not believe me” • Moses is given a series of commands to strengthen his faith

  10. Infidelity (4:1-9) • God’s response: miraculous signs will cause them to believe (Jn. 20:30-31)

  11. Inadequacy (4:10-12) Excuse #4 – “I’m not a good speaker” • Moses was “mighty in his words and works” (Acts 7:22) … why the excuse?

  12. Inadequacy (4:10-12) • Unlike Paul (1 Cor. 2:1-5), Moses was concerned about his speech • God’s response: I will teach you what to say (2 Tim. 4:2)

  13. Inaccessibility (4:13-17) Excuse #5 – “Send who you want” • “Please send someone else” (ESV, CSB, NIV) • God’s response: anger at Moses’ attempt to “pass the buck” (v. 14)

  14. Moses’ Excuses and Ours • Inferiority is no problem for God • Ignorance is no problem for God • Infidelity is no problem for God • Inadequacy is no problem for God • Inaccessibility is no problem for God

  15. Moses’ Excuses and Ours • Do we believe we are inferior (1 Pet. 2:9)? • Do we know what to say to others (1 Pet. 3:15)? • Have we lost faith in the power of God’s word to save (Rom. 1:16)?

  16. Moses’ Excuses and Ours • Are we concerned about eloquence or truth (Eph. 4:15)? • Are we unavailable to do the Lord’s work (1 Cor. 15:58)?

  17. Moses’ Success • He learned that God does not accept excuses (Lk. 14:18) • He learned to concentrate on God, not on himself or others (Heb. 11:24-29)
