  1. Men’s Ministry Class 2Ti 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men , who shall be able to teach others also.

  2. WHY LEARN ABOUT HOW TO MINISTER TO THE CHURCH? • Because the CHURCH TODAY needs more MEN LEADING – Isaiah 3:12 • Because HELPING can be a HUGE BLESSING – 1 Cor. 12:28 • Because it is an OPPORTUNITY to EXALT JESUS CHRIST – Col. 1:18 vs. 3 John 9 • Because it is an OPPORTUNITY to MINISTER to the BODY – Eph. 4:16, 29; • Because it SHOULD BE a REFLECTION of YOUR CHARACTER – 1 Thessalonians 3:2 • Because DESIRING to MINISTER is a GOOD THING – 1 Tim. 3:1

  3. What MINISTERING is NOT ABOUT! • A PLATFORM for SELF – Isaiah 14; 3 John 9 • A PLACE for PREJUDICES – 2 Tim. 4:2 • A PLACE of ATTACK – John 13:12 • A PRACTICE of ROUTINE – Eph. 5:18 • A PLACE of PERSONAL RETALIATION – 1 Sam. 14:24 • A PRACTICE of DIVISION – Romans 16:17

  4. WHAT MINISTERING to the CHURCH CAN DO Through YOU!

  5. Ministering to the Church does NOT Necessitate a PARTICULAR CALLING • 1 Timothy 3:1 – The DESIRE is a GOOD THING, because if one desires this, the MOTIVE should be to MINISTER! • John 13:4-5 - SERVANT LEADERSHIP is BIBLICAL & ANYBODY can be INVOLVED • Gal 5:13 – We are ALL called to SERVE ONE ANOTHER • Col. 1:7; 4:7 – Some of the Bible’s greatest heroes were not declared to be “PASTORS” or “PREACHERS”, but they could SERVE & PREACH if needed!

  6. Ministering to God’s People Could Awaken Something in YOU! • KNOWING SOMETHING vs. TEACHING SOMETHING or COMMUNICATING SOMETHING are 2 very different things. • “THE CALLING IS NOT the ENABLING!” • Some things NEED TO BE STIRRED – 2 Tim. 2:6

  7. When it Comes to PREACHING, Remember “KP” • “KNOWLEDGE” is the “SCIENCE” part, but “PRACTICE” is the “ART” part of PREACHING…they are BOTH necessary! • The Old “Mountain Preachers” would open the Bible and “preach a spell”, and it was a mess!  • HOMILETICS is the SCIENCE & ART governing the PREPARATION & DELIVERY of SERMONS. • This “KP” principle is CONSISTENT throughout the CHRISTIAN LIFE – Matthew 17:16-17; 1 Cor. 8:1; 2 Peter 1:5 • This class will separate those that are TEACHABLE from those that are NOT – be TEACHABLE! 2 Timothy 3:7

  8. What is Involved in “HOMILETICS” • The QUALIFICATIONS of the PREACHER • The URGENT NEED for PREACHING • IMPORTANCE of PROPER PREP of PREACHING MATERIAL • DISCOVERY & ARRANGEMENT of PREACHING MATERIAL • Best means of SECURING the PROPER DELIVERY & RECEPTION of the word PREACHED!

  9. Getting through some “CLUTTER” of TERMINOLOGY • The “GIFT” of PREACHING from a BIBLICAL perspective has to do with “ORDINATION”…1 Tim. 4:14; Rom. 11:29 • The “KNOWLEDGE” to preach comes from HARD WORK called STUDY…2 Tim. 2:15, 21 • The “ABILITY” to PREACH is something that is found by EXERCISING the “GIFT” or “OPPORTUNITIES” in an atmosphere of SPIRITUALITY!

  10. “SAYINGS TO HOLD ON TO”… • “There can be NO IMPRESSION without a CORRESPONDING EXPRESSION!”… • “You make MY BUSINESS YOUR BUSINESS, and I will make YOUR BUSINESS MY BUSINESS!” – Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh • JOHN 20:21 – this is something that is RECIPROCAL! Never lose sight of the ROOT of the MESSAGE and you will eventually see FRUIT from your MESSAGE! • 2 Tim. 2:2 – Remember that you are a LINK to the NEXT GENERATION!

  11. The OUTLINE for our CLASS 1) The Qual of the Preacher2) The Call of the Preacher3) The Necessity for Preaching 4) The Structure / Definition of the Sermon5) The Prep of the Sermon6) The Gathering of Material7) The Delivery of the Message

  12. I) THE QUALIFICATION of the PREACHER • This is CRITICAL because we “CANNOT DIVORCE THE PREACHER from HIS PREACHING”…. • The “Man is his message…the Preacher is his proclamation…the Speaker is his sermon…” • “What YOU ARE speaks SO LOUD the world cannot HEAR WHAT YOU SAY”… - Emerson

  13. THE QUALIFICATION OF THE PREACHER • He MUST be SAVED! (Duh…) • He MUST LOVE the LORD…John 20 • He MUST LOVE SOULS…Matt. 9:36 • He MUST LOVE the CHURCH…Eph. 5:25

  14. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER  • HeMUST LOVE the LORD....DUTY is NOT ENOUGH! •  Consider that NO RELATIONSHIP on earth is RIGHT until one is RIGHT with God....MOTIVE is EVERYTHING in ministry! •  Consider that it was the LOVE OF THE FATHER that Jesus had that MOTIVated HIM!  "NOT MY WILL....but THINE be DONE"!   2Co 5:14  For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

  15. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER • HE MUST LOVE THE SOULS he ministers to! •  This STEMS from a PROPER VALUE SYSTEM for the SINNER'S SOUL – Mark8:36 •  There is a NEED for COMPASSION – Compassion is defined as "FEELING THE PAIN in ANOTHER PERSON'S HEART"… • 1 Corinthians 13 teaches us that CHARITY is more... • SAY (verse 1) • HAVE (verse 2)  •  GIVE (verse 3)

  16. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER  • HE MUST KNOW THE BIBLE – as a WHOLE! •  Familiarity through READING •  Familiarity through MEMORIZATION  •  Familiarity through STUDY – Be a D.D.D.D.D. type of STUDENT of the WORD!  •  DILIGENT STUDY •  DEVOTIONAL STUDY •  DISCERNING STUDY •  DOCTRINAL STUDY •  DISPENSATIONAL STUDY

  17. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER • HE MUST BE A MAN OF PRAYER! • "He who would speak often to man for God, MUST speak much to God for man!"   • PRAYER was the FUEL of Christ's MINISTRY and the EARLY CHURCH!  Luke 3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:29; 11:1-4; 22:32; 23:34-36; MATTHEW 9:37-38; Eph. 1:16-23; 3:14-19; Phil 1:4 •  Chrysostom, an early CHURCH FATHER said of Paul, "Three cubits high, HE TOUCHED THE SKY!"… •  The PROBLEM of PRAYER is it feels that you are doing NOTHING – the REALITY of PRAYER is if you were NOT accomplishing something spiritually, the FLESH would not FIGHT it as much!

  18. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER – PRAYER  • PRAY for FREE COURSE - 2 Thess. 3:1  •  PRAY for CLEANSING – 1 John 1:9 •  PRAY for EYES TO BE OPENED  - Matthew 20:33  •  PRAY for SPIRIT to have LIBERTY - 2 Cor. 3:17  •  PRAY for UTTERANCE  - Eph. 6:19; Col. 4:3 •  PRAY for SPIRITUAL WARFARE -  Eph. 6:18 •  PRAY as JESUS did for HIS DISCIPLES – John 17 • PRESERVATION – vv 9 to 12 • SEPARATION – vv 13-19 •  UNIFICATION – vv 20-21 •  GLORIFICATION – vv 22

  19. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PREACHER • HE MUST LIVE A CLEAN LIFE!!! • “The CONSISTENT LIFE should BACK UP the PERSISTENT TESTIMONY!” • “Unless there is WITHIN US that which is ABOVE US we will YIELD to that which is AROUND US!” • Whether you like it or not, YOU are KEEPING TIME for OTHERS when you MINISTER to them! • 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

  20. THE QUALIFICATIONS of the PREACHER • HE MUST BE SPIRITUALLY FIT • This is something to be DEVELOPED and something that is LOST as in the case with ATROPHY in the PHYSICAL BODY… • This is something that is DEVELOPED in an ATMOSPHERE of SPIRITUALITY • HE MUST BE PHYSICALLY FIT • Food • Exercise – 1 Tim. 4:8; 1 Cor. 9:25 • Rest • “Your body is the DIVINELY ORDAINED VEHICLE through which the HOLY SPIRIT expresses HIMSELF; therefore, take good care of it!” • HE MUST BE MENTALLY FIT • Watch out for HOBBY HORSES & BANDWAGONS – politics, social media garbage, etc. • HE MUST BE EDUCATIONALLY FIT • Bible School • Ministry Class

  21. THE SERVANT’S CALL – Matthew 20 • The CALL is an INDIVIDUAL CALL (PERSONAL) • It is a ONE on ONE thing between the individual and the LORD! • It is born out of an atmosphere of SPIRITUALITY! • It is usually found in ACTIVITY, NOT just in some kind of MYSTIC ISOLATION! • The CALL is a DEFINITE CALL – Romans 11:29 • The CALL is VARIED IN CIRCUMSTANCES • Abraham vs. Gideon • Paul vs. Peter

  22. The SERVANT’S CALL – “Full Time vs. Part-Time” • Nowhere in the Bible is there a distinction between the “CLASSES”. • 1 Peter 4:10 & 2 Cor. 8:12 along with Matthew 25:15 show us that it is based on what the LORD PROVIDES & GIVES to each individual. • EVERY SERVANT of the LORD is “FULL TIME”…you can be a “FULL TIME” GREETER, USHER, DEACON, ONGLEADER, SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER, etc..

  23. The SERVANT’S CALL – it is GOD-GIVEN • Here are some things that God uses to get YOUR ATTENTION to CALL YOU to SERVE: • The HOLY SPIRIT – Romans 8:26-27 • The SCRIPTURES – John 7:17 • COMPASSION – John 4:35 • GODLY COUNSEL - Prov. 11:14; Galatians 2:2 • OPEN DOORS – 1 Cor. 16:9

  24. The NEED for SERVANTS – The DIVINE ORDER • The DIVINE ORDER as outlined in Romans 10:9-15: • GOD SENDS A PREACHER – “THE SOURCE” • HE PREACHES THE WORD – “THE DISPENSING” • THERE IS A HEARER OF THE WORD – “THE RECEIVING” • THIS PERSON BELIEVES – “THE BELIEVING ON” • THIS PERSON ACTS – “THE CALLING ON” • THIS PERSON IS SAVED – “THE SAVING”

  25. The NEED for SERVANTS to MINISTER! • The PREACHING of the WORD is the MEANS by which SOULS are SAVED! • The PREACHING of the WORD is the MEANS by which BELIEVERS are GROUNDED! 2 Tim. 3:15-17 • TO MAKE WISE TO SALVATION • FOR DOCTRINE • FOR REPROOF • FOR CORRECTION • FOR INSTRUCTION • FOR MATURITY • FOR FURNISHING to GOOD WORKS • The MINISTERING of the WORD will…Eph 4 • MATURE the SAINTS • PROVIDE WORK FOR the MINISTRY • EDIFY the BODY • The PREACHER/MINISTER is RESPONSIBLE to RUN HIS RACE! COULDST THOU IN VISION SEE THYSELF, THE MAN GOD MEANT: THEN NEVERMORE WOULDST BE THE MAN THOU ART, CONTENT!!!

  26. EFFECTIVE PREACHING REACHES the WHOLE PERSON! • It SHOULD REACH the INTELLECT (ENLIGHTEN) – PSALM 119:130 • It SHOULD REACH the EMOTIONS (STIRRING) – 2 PETER 1:13 • It SHOULD REACH the WILL (DECISION) – MATTHEW 16:24 • God ALLOWS MAN to have a FREE WILL – Revelation 22:17; Matthew 11:28 • THEREFORE, the PREACHER should call ATTENTION to this SURRENDER – I Peter 4:11 • AVOID “HIGH PRESSURE” TACTICS – 2 Tim. 2:24 • Ask… “Did it ENLIGHTEN, STIR, and was there a DECISION that was CLEAR to BE MADE”? • The word “HEART” provides an ALL ENCOMPASSING word study that affects all THREE!

  27. SOME PERILS for the MINISTER to AVOID… • The PERIL of UNFAMILIARITY with DIVINE THINGS… • The PERIL of INCONSISTENT LIVING… • The PERIL OF NEGLECT… • The PERIL OF PROFESSIONALISM… • The PERIL OF COMPROMISE… • The PERIL OF POPULARITY…

  28. The “FULL TIME” PREACHER • There are 4 THINGS to NOTE about the “FULL TIME” Preacher: 1) He is CALLED OF THE LORD – Acts 13:2 2) He is EQUIPPED BY THE LORD – Eph. 4 • He is COMMENDED BY THE BRETHREN – Acts 13:3; Acts 14:23 • He is HOLY SPIRIT SENT – Acts 13:4; Zech 4:6

  29. The SUPPORT of the PREACHER • Review of 1 Cor. 9:1-23 brings CLARITY to the subject of SUPPORTING the MINISTER/PREACHER…this support is ILLUSTRATED via 3 MANIFESTATIONS: • A SOLDIER – verse 7 • A FARMER – verse 7 • A SHEPHERD – verse 7 In this passage Paul APPEALS to these 2 things in order to PROVE that the PREACHER should be provided for BIBLICALLY: • COMMON DECENCY – vv 9-10 • OT LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD – vv 13-14

  30. The “Conclusion of the Matter” – SUPPORTING the Preacher • “GIVE THE GOSPEL….LIVE OF THE GOSPEL”… • 1 Cor. 9:14 is the PROOF TEXT • IT IS ORDAINED BY GOD • IT IS BLESSED BY GOD • IT IS EXPECTED BY GOD • IT TAKES TIME FOR NEW BELIEVERS – 2 Cor. 8:7, 19

  31. The SERMON & ITS STRUCTURE • DEFINED – “A form of discourse on SCRIPTURAL TRUTH designed to SAVE or EDIFY the hearer”…. • DEFINED by AT PIERSON – “A speech spoken in behalf of or in the name of God”… • DEFINED BY JEFF RAY – “An oral address to a general audience, with a view to unfolding, elaborating, and enforcing Scriptural truth”… Keep in mind the word “SERMON” comes from Latin and it refers to a “STAB or THRUST”, which makes SENSE given the description of the word of God in Hebrews 4:12

  32. The SERMON & ITS STRUCTURE • It is an ORAL ADDRESS – it should be SPOKEN CLEARLY– Nehemiah 8:8 • It is to the POPULAR MIND – it should be UNDERSTOOD EASILY – 1 Cor. 14:9 1 Cor. 9:22; Matt 8:20 • It is to be SCRIPTURALLY GROUNDED – it should be clear that the FOUNDATION of the message is the BOOK!!! 1 Cor. 1:21-24; John 12:32; 1 Cor. 2:1-5 • It should be EXHAUSTIVELY STRUCTURED: • RHETORIC – the RIGHT WORDS should be arranged in the RIGHT ORDER • GRAMMAR – correct USE & PRONUNCIATION of WORDS • LOGIC – there should be an APPEAL to the MIND/HEART that takes the words and MAKES SENSE to the listener • It should LEAD to DECISION

  33. The SERMON & ITS STRUCTURE • There should be a TEXT • There should be a THEME • There should be a INTRODUCTION • There should be a DISCUSSION (main POINTS) • There should be a CONCLUSION

  34. The TEXT of the SERMON • The word “TEXT” comes from a LATIN word meaning “SOMETHING WOVEN”, and is similar to “TEXTURE” – this encompasses ANY passage of SCRIPTURE! • This can refer to: • A SINGLE VERSE • PART OF A VERSE • A WORD IN A VERSE • A PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE

  35. The PURPOSE of the TEXT in a SERMON • It provides AUTHORITY – Mark 1:22 vs. Mark 7:8-9 • It “CONFINES” or “STRUCTURES” the PREACHER’S THOUGHTS – “Sola Scriptura” • It brings UNITY & CONSISTENCY to your SERMON – Isa. 28:10-13 • It helps provide the HEARERS with the SENSE of what is to FOLLOW in the message – Luke 18:10 • It allows for an ENDLESS SUPPLY of THOUGHT / VARIETY – Remember to AVOID “HOBBY HORSES” sticking with the BOOK helps!

  36. The SELECTION of the TEXT in Your SERMON • PRINCIPLE # 1 - You should be CAREFUL when SELECTING your TEXT – see Genesis 3 & Ecclesiastes 9:1-6 for examples… • PRINCIPLE # 2 - Avoid the use of “ODD TEXTS” – see Song of Solomon 8:8; Phil. 3:2 • PRINCIPLE # 3 - It is OK to choose a “FAMILIAR TEXT” – John 3:16 • PRINCIPLE # 4 - Avoid using a TEXT you can’t EXPLAIN – Neh. 8:8 – “GAVE THE SENSE” • PRINCIPLE # 5 – Avoid using a TEXT that “DOESN’T BITE” – if it doesn’t APPEAL to you, it won’t to them! • PRINCIPLE # 6 – KEEP YOUR AUDIENCE in MIND (sometimes this has to do with condition of CHURCH or SEASONS) – 1 Cor. 9:22

  37. The “EXPLANATION / INTERPRETATION” of the TEXT • 2Co 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. • We are looking to EXPOSE (exposition) versus EXEGETE (discover)! PRINCIPLES OF EXPOSITION: • The text should be interpreted HONESTLY • The text should be interpreted via CONTEXT • The text should be interpreted in light of GRAMMATICAL CONSTRUCTION – ENGLISH PRIMARILY – see 2 Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 1:13 • The text should be interpreted in light of BIBLICAL HISTORY – John 4 • The text should be interpreted in light of the REST OF SCRIPTURE – Luke 12:19; Ecc. 9:1 (an OBSCURE TEXT does NOT interpret a CLEAR, but rather a CLEAR determines the OBSCURE) • The text should be interpreted in light of TYPOLOGY - Mark 14; 2 Cor. 14:7 • The text should be interpreted in light of DISPENSATIONAL DIVISIONS in SCRIPTURE

  38. THE THEME – Chapter 13 • THEME DEFINED • The part of the sermon which defines the main truth to be expounded from the text. • A concise statement of the PRINCIPAL TRUTH which the preacher sees in his text. • THE THEME IS THE DISCOURSE CONDENSED…the DISCOURSE IS THE THEME UNFOLDED.

  39. THE THEME – Chapter 13 Examples of THEMES • The THEME will vary from preacher to preacher even on the same passage of Scripture • See Jeremiah 1:11, 13; 24:3 • Example 1 – John 3:16 • The LOVE OF GOD is the ocean, from which the river of salvation takes its course • The Gift of EVERLASTING LIFE is conditioned by faith in Christ • The Revelation of GOD AS THE GIVER here is demonstrated beyond all contradiction • The FOUR DIMENSIONS of the Love of God

  40. THE THEME – Chapter 13 The DISCIPLINE • The preacher should WRITE OUT what the THEME is to him, and use this as a FOUNDATION on which to build his message! LUKE 6:48 • The preacher should STATE what his THEME is before addressing the message itself…Matthew 13:3 • This theme can be stated LOGICALLY or RHETORICALLY!

  41. THE INTRODUCTION – Chapter 14DEFINITION & PURPOSE • The INTRODUCTION is the part of the sermon that leads to DISCUSSION and thus PREPARES the AUDIENCE for the main part of the message! • The INTRODUCTION has a few KEY PURPOSES: • To awaken the hearer’s interest in the subject that has been chosen • To enable the speaker to get past obstacles to gaining their interest • To prepare the audience for an understanding of the theme under consideration • To secure the good will of the audience • SEE PETER’S INTRO in Acts 2:14-21

  42. THE INTRODUCTION – Chapter 14 THE IMPORTANCE • The INTRO has been called the “CRUCIAL FIVE MINUTES”. You can either GAIN or LOSE your audience in this time. • We should study the BEST WAY to gain access into people’s minds with a view to SELL THE TRUTH to them!

  43. THE INTRODUCTION – Chapter 14SUGGESTIONS • Think of it as the “ONE LINER” that got you to “CLICK” on a site and BUY! • It is the CONDUIT to lead to the DISCUSSION • NEVER OVER PROMISE & UNDER DELIVER • It should NOT be too LONG • It should be VARIED • It should be SIMPLE – “SIMPLICITY is TRUTH’S MOST BECOMING GARB!”

  44. THE INTRODUCTION – Chapter 14SOURCES / EXAMPLES (pp 1 • From the TEXT ITSELF… • From the BOOK that the TEXT comes from… • By comparing the TEXT with OTHER TEXTS with the SAME THEME – 1 Cor. 2:13 • By an ARRESTING QUESTION that grabs attention – Matthew 11:7 • By a reference to BIBLICAL HISTORY/CUSTOMS • By an ILLUSTRATION or STORY • By CURRENT EVENTS • By SECULAR HISTORY • By QUOTING a HYMN / POEM…
