  2. Convention of 1836 • 2nd Meeting of the Consultation. • Delegates declared Texas independent on March 2, 1836. • Within 2 weeks, they wrote a Constitution.

  3. Declaration of Independence • George Childress was the writer of Texas’ Declaration of Independence. • It was modeled after the U.S. Declaration of Independence of 1776.

  4. Three Sections • The first section declares the Right of Revolution. • The second section lists the complaints against the central government. • The third section proclaims independence.

  5. Republic of Texas • Because the Texas Revolution had not ended yet in victory, the delegates established an ad interim (temporary) government. • The new nation was named the Republic of Texas.

  6. Interim Officers • President: David G. Burnet • Vice President: Lorenzo de Zavala • Commander-in-chief of the Texas Army: Sam Houston

  7. Santa Anna • On April 22, 1836, David Burnet negotiated with Santa Anna, who signed the Treaties of Velasco.

  8. Treaties of Velasco • In the Public Treaty of Velasco, Santa Anna agreed to never fight Texas again. • He also agreed to withdraw all Mexican troops from Texas.

  9. Secret Treaty • In a secret treaty, Santa Anna promised to work for Mexico’s recognition of Texas’ independence. • He also promised to establish the boundary between Texas & Mexico at the Rio Grande River. • In return for signing, Santa Anna was released.

  10. President of Texas • On July 1836, Sam Houston won the election for President of the Republic of Texas. • He defeated Henry Smith & Stephen F. Austin with 5,119 votes.
