  1. How Do Mountains Form? Chapter 6Lesson 3 SPI’SScience 7.7.1, 7.7.2Reading 5.1.2, 5.1.7, 5.1.12, 5.1.16, 5.1.17, 5.1.28, 5.1.30, 5.1.31

  2. Main Idea You will name and describe the four types, or classes of mountains. See if you can figure out what type mountains the Smokies are!

  3. Vocabulary • Dome mountains • Fault-block mountains • Fold mountains • Volcanic mountains

  4. Let’s write our vocab. definitions in our Science Journals • Dome mountains– mountains that form when magma pushes up on Earth’s crust but does not break through.

  5. Vocab. Cont… • Fault-block mountains- mountains that form along fault lines where blocks of rock fall, are thrust up, or slide. The Rocky Mountains are fault-block mountains, and they are located in the Southwestern region of our country. P. 229 of your text has a picture of a fault-block mountain.

  6. Vocab. Cont… • Fold mountains- mountains that form where two plates collide and force layers of rock into folds. (On P. 228 of your text is a picture of the Andes Mountains which are Fold Mountains.)

  7. Vocab. Cont… • Volcanic mountains- magma that rises up through the Earth’s crust, forming a mountain.

  8. Who Remembers what we’re learning in this lesson? • C’mon… you should know this…

  9. Who Remembers what we’re learning in this lesson? • We’re learning to describe the four types, or classes of mountains.

  10. Mountain Formation We’ll read PP. 228 and 229. I need a volunteer to begin reading on P. 228. Be sure to ask yourself questions about the text as you read. (This technique helps you understand what you are reading…)

  11. Question Where do most of the larger mountain ranges form?

  12. Answer Where two plates collide and force layers of rocks into folds.

  13. Question Which type of mountain is usually formed at converging boundaries?

  14. Answer Fold mountains ALWAYS occur at converging boundaries.

  15. In your Science Journals… • Summarize: What are two ways in which mountains are formed? • Contrast: How do older mountains differ from younger mountains? • Compare: What do fold mountains and fault-block mountains have in common?

  16. Read to find out… We’ll read PP 230 and 231 to find the following information: • Where does volcanic activity occur? • How do dome mountains form? • Which mountains have been shaped by erosion? • How do erosion mountains differ from all other types of mountains?

  17. The Appalachian Mountains Ahhh, these are OUR mountains!!! Follow along in your text while I read P. 232. There will be a 20 question quiz over chapter 6, so PAY ATTENTION while I’m reading!!

  18. Chapter 6 Quiz Turn to PP. 238 and 239 in your text. On a separate sheet of paper answer questions 1-20. Be sure to PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR PAPER!!! When you are finished put your paper in the Science box and begin self-selected reading.
