  4. Qoheleth: the Preacher • Design is an interview/dialog • It is in retrospect or review fashion • He is looking back and sharing the results with the listener through this mock dialog • The perspective is how this is to be approached

  5. Jewish Feasts and Wisdom Literature • Ruth – Pentecost • Song of Songs – Passover • Ecclesiastes – Tabernacles • Lamentations – anniversary of the fall of Jerusalem or occasions of mourning • Esther – Purim

  6. 5 General approaches • Pessimistic/Skeptic view • Shows incompleteness of OT and great need • Preacher of Joy view • Rejoice in sufferings • Existential view • Since life is absurd, find inner truth • Apologetic view • Shows to warn that secular satisfaction is an illusion • Confusion of order view • Everything has its place, to confuse the order will bring angst
