  1. The Devil & SATAN James 1

  2. Agenda • What is Sin? • The Origin of Sin • God’s Character & Power • The Devil of the Bible • The SATAN of the Bible • Demons of the Bible • Conclusions • What does this mean to me?

  3. What is Sin? 1 John 3:4 • Whosoever committeth sin [266] transgresseth also the law: for sin [266] is the transgression of the law [458]. • One Word “Anomia” – Greek • 458 anomia an-om-ee'-ah from 459; illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:--iniquity, X transgress(-ion of) the law, unrighteousness. – Strong LXX 1 Timothy 1:9 • Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, • 459 anomos an'-om-os from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3551; lawless, i.e. (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication, a Gentile), or (positively) wicked:--without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked. – Strong LXX • To be lawless – to ignore or to be ignorant of God’s Law’s – HPM

  4. The Origin of Sin James 1:13-15 • 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: • 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. • 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

  5. The Origin of Sin Matthew 7:20-23 • 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. • 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, • 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: • 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

  6. The Origin of Sin Jeremiah 17:9 • The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Romans 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  7. The Origin of Sin Romans 7:14-25 • 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. • 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. • 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. • 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. • 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. • 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. • 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. • 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. • 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: • 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. • 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? • 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

  8. God’s Character God is All Powerful • 1 Timothy 1:17 • 17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. • Psalm 104:30 • 30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. • 1 Timothy 6:15-16 • 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; • 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

  9. God’s Character God is just • Romans 11:22 • 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. • Exodus 34:6-7 • 6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, • 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

  10. The God of the Bible God is all powerful God is all knowing God is righteous God is just The Traditional Devil demands God does not have power over the devil God granted eternal life to a being that would sin God punishes men + women for sin caused by the devil God’s Character / Traditional Devil

  11. The devil of the Bible • Judas – John 6:70-71 • Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve. • Women – 1 Timothy 3:11 • Even so must their wives be grave, not devils, sober, faithful in all things. • Men – 2 Timothy 3:3 • Without natural affection, trucebreakers, devils, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, • 1228 diabolos dee-ab'-ol-os from 1225; a traducer; specially, Satan (compare 7854):--false accuser, devil, slanderer. Strongs LXX • Cp. We call our children “little devils”

  12. The SATAN of the Bible • God – 2 Samuel 24:1 cp. 1 Chron. 21:1 • And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. • 1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

  13. The SATAN of the Bible • An obedient Angel – Numbers 22:22 • Hadad the Edomite – 1Kings 11:14 • Peter – Matthew 16:23 Heb: 7854 satan saw-tawn' from 7853; an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed) Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary, Satan, withstand. Grk: 4566 Satan sat-an' of Hebrew origin (7854); Satan, i.e. the devil:--Satan. Compare 4567.

  14. Demons of the Bible

  15. Conclusions • The Bible says that we disobey God because of our own desires • The traditional devil does not fit with God’s character of goodness and severity • The Bible uses language that we can easily understand if we read it carefully • The devil of the Bible is one who is a false accuser or a slanderer • The SATAN of the Bible is simply a word that means an adversary • The Demon of the Bible is description of diseases that were not understood in Jesus’ day

  16. What does this mean to me? • We do not have to fear an external devil • We cannot blame the devil for our sins • When we disobey God it is our own fault • God is righteous and we will receive our just reward from Him • We need to read our Bibles carefully in order to understand what it is saying • This means that we have to overcome our lusts and desires if we want Eternal Life • Our own actions determine our future • We cannot make excuses – Gen 3:12-13
