  1. Representational Devices

  2. Representation Devices Representation is the process by which the media presents the ‘real world’ to an audience. A popular understanding of representation is through stereotypes.

  3. Representation Devices Punks are associated with safety pins in their clothes and bodies, and Mohican haircuts. This is the stereotype of a punk, but although there will be many punks who do not look like this. Anarchy -punks are often linked to the idea of anarchy through their individualism represented through their image Rebellious - they are often associated rebellion as they stand out from the norm Alternative - image presents us with an alternative look that is not typically associated with everyday society

  4. Representation Devices People associate the sophisticated and elegant characteristic of the actress with the brand and the fragrance. The use of a model who fits into the stereo-typical notion of the ‘blonde, blue-eyed beauty’ however this image doesn’t represent the everyday woman in society therefore making it distorted from reality. The brand itself is associated with style and glamour.

  5. Representation Devices Majority of attention that young people get in terms of the media, most of the time is usually negative. Young people are often only recognized for negative behaviour. For example, during the riots in 2011, young people peoples anarchist behaviour caused outrage. Young people were presented as being hooligans and criminals. This relates to the theory of how select/repeat aspects of intricate social relations in order to represent them as fixed, natural, obvious and ready to consume which distorts from the reality as not all young people behave in this manner.
