  2. Copy this sentence... Hooray! The silly horse finally jumped over the fence and quickly finished the race, but he still finished in last place. Identify each word in the sentence according to its part of speech: noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection

  3. Nouns and pronouns • Nouns: A person, a place, a thing • Be aware of abstract nouns—something your senses cannot detect—like happiness, bravery or trust. • A pronoun replaces a noun: he, she, it, his, her, their, etc.

  4. Verbs • Express action in a sentence • Express the state of being  is, was, becomes • Each sentence must contain a verb, known as “the predicate.” • The predicate must agree with the main noun or pronoun in the sentence, “the subject.”

  5. Adjectives • Words that describe or modify nouns • Adjectives usually come before nouns.

  6. Adverbs and Interjections Adverbs Interjections • Describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. • Often end in –ly • Can be located anywhere in a sentence. • Express emotion

  7. Conjunctions and Prepositions Conjunctions Prepositions • Join words, phrases, clauses, and sentences together. • Identify the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to the rest of the sentence.

  8. Compose a sentence that uses all 8 parts of speech at least once in the sentence. Keep the sentences simple! Trade sentences with your partner and have them identify your parts of speech. Make sure that you agree.
