  1. Breakout Group 1 Summary NSF workshop on Bridging the Gap between Wireless Networking Technologies at the Physical Layer Aug. 27-28

Additional Issues Raised • Heterogeneity of devices and networks • Co-existence in same bands. • Common control channel? • Device processing constraints • How to include in optimization models? • Incorporate “overhead” into optimization metrics • Limited feedback, convergence of algorithms, etc. • Interference management • Need better theory and understanding of role in networks. • Relation between different PHY-layer abstractions • E.g. Performance/complexity trade-offs • Wireless security • Multiple dimensions: Jamming, information hiding, anonymity, etc. • Phy-layer approaches

  3. Some broader issues • Wireless networks are not just the Internet with different PHY-layer. • Lack of many “rich” and relevant theoretical sub-problems that community can focus on. • E.g. Backpressure. • Need to avoid disconnect of theory and applications. • Ensure work stays relevant. • Application-motivated networks (e.g. sensor networks) • What future resources will be scarce? • Spectrum, energy, processing… • Need to build a stronger “wireless networking” community. • Covers broad areas represented here • Common language, culture

  4. Action items • New broad-based (interdisciplinary) NSF program on wireless networking. • Include rich agenda of PHY-to-application work. • Cellular research model vs. ad hoc model. • DOD spending a lot in this area, but not sufficiently addressing fundamentals. • Can help strengthen community. • Allow larger interdisciplinary projects. • But not at exclusion of small (single PI) projects. • “Grand challenges”? • More on-going workshops like this to encourage broad discussions.
