The Basics • My apologies to those who are already in the know… • Hardware & Peripherals • Software (applications) • Word processors, spreadsheets, multimedia, markbooks, Curriculum Development, email, web building, etc…
Hardware • The stuff you can touch… • Includes the computer itself as well as peripherals like • cameras, • camcorders, • printers, • web cams, etc.
Software • The stuff written in binary code (zeros and ones) that make your computer do what you want it to (and sometimes things you don’t). • Typically comes on a CD or DVD or can be downloaded from the internet.
Teacher Tip… • We get discounts on most software titles because we are teachers. • For example… MS Office costs $400.00 • If you are a teacher or student the cost is only $200.00 • Must be purchased from an educational reseller though… (e.g. any university book store)
Online Resources/Applications • What is the internet? • What is a URL? • Finding Information • Conducting searches • Using online databases/libraries
What is the Internet? • The Internet refers to the worldwide network of interconnected computers. • Every publicly accessible web site is hosted by a web server computer, which is a part of the Internet. • Every personal computer, cell phone or other device that people use to look at web sites is also a part of the Internet. • Web servers are the computers that actually run web sites.
URLs • URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator and is a reference (an address) to a resource on the Internet. • The last three letters after the “.” give some information about the source of a site. • Examples: • .com - business • .edu - post secondary institution • .gov - government • These can also designate country where site originates. Example: • .ca - Canada • .za - South Africa • .uk - Great Britiain
Finding Information Online • Your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.) • Using a “search engine” • Framing a search: • To narrow a search use a phrase that is bracketed by quotation marks. For example: • “peer pressure” • This is a common phrase so to narrow it further type in “peer pressure”and“adolescent boys” to narrow your search further. Notice the reduction in “hits”
