Entry Level Driving Proficiencies • Outside checks and entering the vehicle safely. • Inside checks of various systems: • Close and lock the door, put the key in the ignition • Adjust seat first, mirrors, and head restraints • Put on a seat belt • Turn ignition to on and check gauges • ABS, oil light, electrical systems, etc… • Staring the engine • Cover the brake • Release the key

Entry Level Driving Proficiencies • Select the proper gear • Tracking – keeping your vehicle on an intended path of travel in a straight line • In a straight line • On a curve • Out of a curve • Steering • Hand over hand • Push pull • Pulling to the curb • Leaving the vehicle safely • All of the above items are considered level one proficiencies.

  3. Entry Level Driving Proficiencies • Things to Watch Out For: • Looking at your feet • Looking at the controls • “White Knuckles” on the steering wheel • Aiming low when steering • Poor speed control • Failure to track well • Checking the wrong blind spot • Improper seat adjustment

  4. More Advanced Skills • Changing lanes and passing on the highway • Blind spots • Lane position • Right and left turns • Backing (tracking to the rear) • Hand position • Where to look • Two point turns • Three point turns • U-turns

  5. More Advanced Skills • Parking on hills • Angle parking – in and out • Perpendicular parking – in and out • Expressway driving – entering and exiting • Rural and urban driving • Traffic observation – Smith System and S.I.P.D.E.

  6. Safety Tips • Make eye contact at intersections and other interaction situations • Park in spaces east to get out of • No loose articles in passenger compartments • Let things lie • When in doubt, go straight • Dim headlights when approaching or meeting vehicles

  7. Safety Tips • In a skid don’t forget to continue steering throughout the skid • Drive slower in inclement weather • Never assume you have the right of way • Avoid stopping on the side of the road whenever possible • Remember that highways are the most slippery just after it starts raining

  8. Special Conditions for Beginning Drivers • Night driving • Snow and ice • Heavy rain • Jump starting a battery • Flat tires and checking tire pressure • Checking fluids • Basic maintenance
