  1. MICROTRAINING SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE M1_Mobility: GetStarted

  2. ACTIVE START: Do the right mix • See videooftheEU campaign„Do theright mix“: http://dotherightmix.eu/ • „By being flexible in your approach to using transport [...] you can uncover a world of benefits: .. • Make the most of your time… Whilst on public transport you can use your time to read the newspaper, check e-mails on your smartphone, work on your laptop, chat with your friends, or just sit back, relax, and listen to music. • Squeeze in a workout… Cycling or walking to work over short distances (up to 5 km) gives you the 30 minutes of exercise per day that you need to stay healthy and fit. [...] 2

  3. ACTIVE START: Do the right mix • Save money …for yourself: Sustainable transport users in cities where public transport usage is high save 500-600 litres of fuel per year – that’s the equivalent of 15 full tanks or a trip abroad for you and your partner [...]. …and for society: Every kilometre cycled instead of driven saves the economy an estimated EUR 0.97 in indirect costs [...]. • Make your city more liveable…A journey from home to work by car consumes 90 times more urban space and community infrastructure than the same journey by metro, and 20 times more space than if you had taken the bus or tram [...] • …as well as the whole planet. If the EU cycling rate were the same as it is in Denmark, where the average person cycles 965km per year, then we could cut EU transport emissions by over 25 % [...]!” (http://dotherightmix.eu/campaign/do-the-right-mix, 2012-10-31) 3

  4. DISCUSSION: your motives • What are the reasons for your mobility mix? 5

  5. HOW TO CONTINUE • Self monitoring: Watch your travel mode choice in the coming week! • What do think and how do you feel about it? • Next Session: Steps towards doing the right mix 6

  8. ACTIVE START: thats what the others say: • “I really like walking home. I feel better after I do it.” (the lifestyle project) • Since I regularly go to work with public transport, for me, the car fasting initiative is a good occasion, even for leisure trips to leave the car at home more often in favor of public transport. (autofasten.at; own translation) • "My contribution to the car fasting is a small car that I share with my daughter. Our intent is to fill up only 1 time every three months and try to get along with it Thus, we succeed in making only absolutely necessary trips by car. "(autofasten.at; own translation) 9

  9. EXERCISE: Imagine a drastic shift • Image you all will take part in the “car-free month” initiative during the nextfour weeks and • you commit yourselves: • Either to avoid going by car completely • Or at least drastically reduce driving by car. • (in line with the Austrian initiative „Autofasten“ (“car fasting”), see http://www.autofasten.at/) • Gather in groups of 3-4 persons and give mutual advice how to succeed in this task. 10

  10. DISCUSSION: Feasible first steps • In order to prepare for a car-free month or a modal shift: • Which no-cost or low cost activities could be started within the next 72 hours (three days)? 11

  11. HOW TO CONTINUE • Personal resolution: your next step towards the right mobility mix! • Take a note on something you will implement within 72 hours (3 days). • After 2 - 3 days look at this note again and examine to what extent have you managed to go the first steps in this direction. • Next session: • Exchange of experiences • Preparing the shift 12

  15. EXERCISE: Preparing the shift • Partner Interview: • What will you have to change • in your mobility behaviour • in the way you organize your transportation needs • in order to shift towards „ the right mobility mix“? 16

  16. DISCUSSION: Supportive action • Which information, which support do you need? • How will you get it? 17

  17. HOW TO CONTINUE • Create a short fact sheet for your "Sustainable Mobility mix" project: • Reflection and evaluation of the successes in the last microtraining session [fill in date] 18
