  1. Come in quietlyGet ready for a quiz

  2. Announcements Quiz- Friday Ecology Unit Test- 4/11 Lab Report Due-4/11 • We will spend time next week writing it -Notebook Check Date Change • 4/10=2 grades

  3. Get Ready for NotesPg. 81-82Title: Biodiversity

  4. Which ecosystem has more biodiversity? Think- Write down you answer on pg.81 and explain what biodiversity means Pair- share with your elbow partner you answer and reasoning Share- share with the class your answer and reasoning 1 2

  5. Species: Group of organisms that can interbreed. The more species in an ecosystem, the more stable and healthy the ecosystem.

  6. Biodiversity Bio= Life Diverse= Different Variety of life in one area; the # of species in that area.

  7. Check for Understanding • Where do you see the most biodiversity? • Why do you think it has the most biodiversity? • Where do you see the least biodiversity? • Why do you think it has the least biodiversity?

  8. Measuring Biodiversity • Species richness- # of different species • Species evenness- # of individuals per species • Genetic diversity- varieties of individuals in a species

  9. Which has more Species Richness? Both! = 7 Species

  10. Which has more Species Evenness?

  11. What has more Species Richness?

  12. So why is diversity important?

  13. Biodiversity lessens the threat • Higher chance for survival • Only some would die but the rest of the species would live. • Genetics of certain individuals allow it to survive better. They will have offspring. Natural Threats Predation, Natural Catastrophes, Social Changes and Genetic Inconsistencies can kill a whole species or a large group of individuals.

  14. Without Biodiversity • Extinction would occur • Loss of resources (food, medicine, shelter)

  15. Limited resources- not enough for everyone • Overexploitation- killing or harvesting and over selling • Introduction of non-native species. What threatens Biodiversity? These are things that are lessening our biodiversity amongst living and nonliving organisms

  16. Let’s Check It Out- biodiversity with Bill Nye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZJJWYGIb44

  17. BEHAVIOARL EXPECTATIONS: • Silence • Independent • Assigned seat Let’s Practice- pg. 83(15 min ONLY)

  18. Biodiversity Lab- Pg. 84 • Assigned lab group • Read directions • Listen to Ms. Schlansky’s directions • DON’T EAT THE CANDY
