  1. Organizing Your Favorites By Eric Moore March 11, 2006

  2. Part 1 General Principles

  3. General Principles • Have a plan, but be flexible when needed • Be (ruthlessly) discriminating about what you keep • Start early and be consistent

  4. Part 2 My Recommendations

  5. My Recommendations • Use short, descriptive names • Keep them sorted • Use a logical hierarchy of folders • Keep the folder depth reasonable • Keep only folders in the root level of your bookmarks • Do not abuse the Links toolbar

  6. Naming Your Bookmarks • The name should be just long enough to identify where it points to • Use standard abbreviations when appropriate • Combine the name of the entity with the section description • Use the entity name for the folder and the section name for the bookmark

  7. Naming Examples • Bad: • “Home Page” • “http---www.cugg.org” • “Slashdot.org News for nerds, stuff that matters” • Good: • “Microsoft Home” • “CUGG” • “Slashdot.org”

  8. Sort Your Bookmarks • Sort them automatically (easiest) or sort them manually (harder) • Use an underscore to force items to the top of the list • Be aware that names beginning with numbers may not sort as you would expect

  9. Maintain a Hierarchy of Folders • Divide up your bookmarks into broad categories such as “Computers” or “Science” • Break up broad categories into narrower ones such as “Physics,” “Astronomy,” and “Mathematics” • An entire folder should be viewable without scrolling

  10. Keep the Folder Depth Reasonable • If too shallow, you may have: • Too many bookmarks grouped together • Folders with too few bookmarks • If too deep, you will: • Be slowed when navigating the folders • Easily become lost • Wear our your mouse and wrist much sooner

  11. Do Not Abuse the Links Toolbar • The Links toolbar is useful for quick, easy access to your favorite website • Don’t allow it to become cluttered • Use abbreviations to save space • If absolutely necessary, use subfolders

  12. Part 3 Ongoing Housecleaning

  13. Housecleaning Tips • Be alert to opportunities to reorganize when you have an obvious need • Weed out any obsolete bookmarks • When you get a new computer, start over • Don’t be a packrat • If necessary, export your bookmarks to a file
