  5. Some SGE History • Early 1990s, VPP’s popularity grew, but OSHA’s resources did not • OSHA worked with VPPPA and developed the concept of “qualified volunteer”/SGE • In 1994, SGE Program began

  6. SGE Basics • Over 1,300 active SGEs • 81% of VPP Onsite Evaluation Teams have at least 1 SGE • Using SGEs has saved OSHA over $4 million

  7. General SGE Qualifications • Familiar with OSHA Regulations • Familiar with VPP Requirements • Demonstrate Leadership • Strong Interpersonal Skills • Reading & Writing Skills • Management/Corporate Support

  8. SGE Qualifications: Safety & Health Professionals • 2 + Years of Experience in S&H • 50% Rule • Employee of VPP site • Employee at corporate office with direct oversight of at least 1 VPP site • Employee of non-VPP site previously employed at VPP site within same corporation

SGE Qualifications: Non Safety & Health Professionals • Site Employee for 2 + Years • Satisfy 3 of 9 Rule • “3 of 9” Rule • Chair S&H Committee • Accident/Incident Coordinator • Lead Inspection Team • Perform Hazard Analyses • Conduct S&H Training • Active Member of Prep Team for VPP • Active Employee Participation in VPP • Coordinate Hazard Abatement • Knowledge of S&H Management

  11. Application • VPP SGE Eligibility Information Sheet • Optional Application for Federal Employment (OF 612) OR Resume • Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450)

  12. SGE Training • Training several times a year • (Typically) Occurs at VPP host site • No Course Fees • Conducted by OSHA & Veteran SGEs • How To Be A VPP Onsite Evaluation Team Member - 3 full days of training

How Do You Get Selected for VPP Onsite Team? • Complete SGE 3-day training • Name added to global SGE email list & some Regions have their own SGE email lists • Team Leaders solicit volunteers by email • Date of onsite; site name & location; expertise needed • Visit the SGE webpage for available onsites

  19. SGE Renewal Time • Notification package emailed out • Application re-approval process • Swearing in / appointment affidavit • Active for 3 more years
