  2. Fitness Habits of Students • Current American Lifestyle fosters lack of fitness. Why? • Mechanical devices • Technology

  3. What has the research shown us about people who workout? • Active lifestyle during childhood has a direct benefit to health in later years. • Those who are active as children tend to be active as adults. • So should PE be mandatory for all children?

  4. What has the research shown has happened to high school students over the past 20 years? • Overall fitness has declined • Poor eating habits • Blood pressure higher • Higher % of body fat • If overweight as a teenager, odds are you will be overweight as an adult • About ½ of people 12-21 regularly participate in vigorous physical activity • ¼ of young people report no vigorous physical activity

  5. Good News Americans are aware that inactivity and poor health habits are linked to illnesses and early death. There is a trend to health and fitness in the last 10 years Bad News Not enough exercising and changing lifestyles 10% of adults get recommended amount of activity ¼ of adults have no leisure time activity Fitness in America

  6. Lifestyle diseases Many of the major health problems are caused by our lifestyles Examples: Heart disease High blood pressure Stroke Diabetes (Type 2) Cancer Emphysema Cirrhosis of Liver What is the major cause of the deaths in our country? What are people dying from?

Health – State of complete physical, mental and social well being More than “absence of disease” Wellness Quality of life Components Intellectual-think critically Physical Emotional-manage stress Positive self-concept Spiritual-meaning & purpose in life Social-relationships What does it mean to be healthy?

  8. To be truly healthy • Balanced Lifestyle • All components are related to each other.

  9. Physical Fitness • The ability to attain certain physical attributes • Perform daily activities with vigor • Reduce risk of health problems related to lack of exercise • Complete a variety of activities
