  1. Challenges Building out a Smart Grid Communications Infrastructure

  2. Headquartered in Bastrop, Texas on 480 acres set aside for nature conservation and the endangered Houston toad habitat.

  3. Service Area Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative serves over 81,000 meters and owns and maintains about 11,000 miles of power lines, located across more than 3,800 square miles within 14 southeastern Texas counties. Bluebonnet’s service area stretches from Travis County to Washington County and from Milam County down to Gonzales County. * Average: 7 meters per mile of line

  4. Bluebonnet’s current Comm. systems • Harris Microwave system • Licensed MDS 900 Mhz radio system communicating to 42 substations • Mobile Data in 65 trucks (using cellular) • AVL in all Bluebonnet vehicles (LCRA EDACS Radio system) • AVL in all Contractor vehicles (using cellular)

  5. What are the current and future communications needs for Smart grid applications?

  6. Smart Grid Communication requirements • Secure –must ensure end-to-end security • Reliable - thenetwork must be Always-on. • Flexible - the Smart Grid network need to have the flexibility to cover the same coverage area as the grid. • Scalable-the network needs the scalability to meet current and future demand.

  7. Last-Mile connectivity • Satellite communication • Advantages: • Global coverage • Rapid installation • Disadvantages: • Latency issues • Fading due to weather conditions • Cost

  8. Last-Mile connectivity • Optical fiber communication • Advantages: • Extremely high bandwidth capacity • More secure • Immune to EMI/RFI interference • Disadvantages: • Cost • Point-to-Point

  9. Last-Mile connectivity • Wireless communication • Licensed Frequency • Advantages: • Tend to have higher throughputs and be more reliable • No reoccurring charges for data throughputs • Own the network • Disadvantage: • More expensive because of licensing fees and the additional time needed to install the system

  10. Last-Mile connectivity • Wireless communication • Unlicensed Frequency • Advantages: • Lower total cost • No licensing fees • Quick and easy deployments • Disadvantage: • Subject to potential interference issues

  11. Last-Mile connectivity • Wireless communication • 3G Cellular • Advantages: • Cost effective • Lower Capital and Maintenance costs • Rapid installation • Disadvantage: • Limited coverage • lack of control or dependent on third party service.
