  1. Notes: Quarks Smaller Particles of Matter

  2. QUARKED! • http://www.quarked.org/video/

  3. Website Link • The following information comes from http://www.particleadventure.org/quarks.html • Use the link as a resource for yourself!

  4. Quarks • Quarks are one type of matter particle. • Most of the matter we see around us is made from protons and neutrons, which are composed of quarks.

  5. Quark Pairs • There are six quarks, but physicists usually talk about them in terms of three pairs: • up/down • charm/strange • top/bottom. • Also, for each of these quarks, there is a corresponding antiquark. • Be glad that quarks have such silly names -- it makes them easier to remember!

  6. Quark Pairs

  7. Finding the Last Quark • The most elusive quark, the top quark, was discovered in 1995 after its existence had been theorized for 20 years.

  8. Video Link • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMgi2j9Ks9k

  9. Words to Know: • Subatomic- particles that make up atoms (protons, neutrons, electrons) • Quark- tiny, tiny, tiny particles that make up protons & neutrons

  10. Video Questions • Has a quark ever been isolated? • Has anyone ever seen a quark? • What is the accelerator (Tevatron) used for? • What kind of energy is used to force the hydrogen atoms around the accelerator? • What are the 3 pairs (flavors) of quarks?
