Coordinating Council Mission • The Coordinating Council (CC) mission: • To be the technology champion of ITS America • Advance the technical vision for the Society • Foster active engagement of ITS America membership and selected external groups • Initiate technical activities that further the ITS America strategic plan • The Council meets via teleconference the first Thursday of every month

Safety Forum • LEADERSHIP Chair: James Misener, Booz Allen Hamilton • Vice Chair: Rich Hanowski, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute • MISSION The Safety Forum considers advancements in research and deployment of ITS safety systems in response to a comprehensive, research-based view of national needs for new solutions. It collaboratively supports and promotes the demonstration and deployment of promising technology rich safety systems and contributes to the development of national deployment policies and technological standards. COMMITTEES Cooperative Systems Vehicle & Roadway Telecommunications Emergency Response & Homeland Security Traffic Safety Advancement Group (TSAG) Human Interaction with ITS Systems • 2010 ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 275 registered members • Co-authored NHTSA Sample Texting Law (Jan. 2010) • Sponsored driver distraction panel discussion featuring NHTSA Admin. (May 2010) • Produced position statement on driver distraction (Dec. 2010)

Personal Mobility Forum • LEADERSHIP Chair: Brad Dennard, PBS&J • Vice Chair: Barry Einsig, Harris Corporation • MISSION The Personal Mobility Forum collaborates on all aspects of transportation management systems including freeway, arterial, transit, urban and rural applications. The forum is organized into a number of committees that focus on specific topics of interest that are applicable to the larger community associated with Personal Mobility. COMMITTEES Passenger Transp. Systems & Services Rural ITS Special Interest Group Arterial Management Systems Freeway Management Systems Data Management & Performance Measures Incident Management & Emergency Services • 2010 ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 200 registered members • Established monthly web meetings for steering group and committees • Hosted November webinar on future of TMCs • Took lead organizer role for 2011 WC showcase on performance measures • Developed multiple webinars as part of ITS America 2011 series

Commercial Vehicle & Freight Mobility • LEADERSHIP Chair: Dan Murray, American Transportation Research Institute • Vice Chair: Steve Keppler, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance • MISSION The CVFM works with the public and private sectors to promote the development and deployment of commercial vehicle and intermodal freight technologies and systems. Using the ongoing collaboration with key state, regional, international, and industry partners and associations it provides policy guidance and addresses critical questions related to emerging technologies and information systems. • 2010 ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 280 registered members • Held web meeting to update members on commercial vehicle conferences, legislation, industry news (Oct. 2010) • Established project to shape ITS America vision for truck IntelliDriveSM (Oct. 2010) • Developing 2011 webinar on transp. finance COMMITTEES Steering Committee

Sustainable Transportation Working Group • LEADERSHIP Chairs: Lou Neudorff, Iteris and Larry Yermack, Telvent • Vice Chair: Josh Peterman, Fehr and Peers • MISSION The STWG collects and evaluates data and information and supports research and the identification of existing and emerging technologies to address the relationship between transportation and climate change. It informs the public, policymakers and lawmakers about the capability of transportation technologies, operational strategies, funding mechanisms, and integrated traffic management systems. COMMITTEES Livable Communities Transportation Systems Efficiency Vehicles, Fuels & Supporting Infrastructure Environmental Performance Measures Inventory/Manage Agency CO2 Footprint Adaptation Sustainable Transportation Policy • 2010 ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 175 registered members • Published ITS America Technology & Sustainability position statement (May 2010) • Published Operations & ITS response to Moving Cooler (June 2010) • Partnered with State Chapters Council to address sustainability issues at state and local levels (Nov. 2010)

Cross-Cutting Issues Forum • LEADERSHIP Chair: Bruce Eisenhart, Consensus Systems Technologies • Vice Chair: Bob McQueen, Kimley-Horn and Associates • MISSION The Cross-Cutting Issues Forum will initiate, execute, and promote member-driven projects associated with the broad scope of ITS that crosses two or more of ITS America’s “outcome” focused Forums. COMMITTEES Benefits, Evaluations & Costs Electronic Payment North American Traffic Working Group Research Working Group Surface Transportation Weather Systems Engineering Training & Education • 2010 ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 125 registered members • Published industry traffic information benchmarking guidelines (April 2010) • Sponsored opening ITS America webinar on congestion management (Sept. 2010) • Initiated ITS research needs partnership with UTC program – kicked off university research-based webinar series (Nov. 2010)

Coordinating Council Program • Forum membership ranges from 120-275 • 26 Committees with membership ranging from 12-75 per • Produced/contributed to 5 significant ITS documents in 2010 • Contributed 10 Webinar Sessions to the 2011 ITS America Series • Designed and executed 40 sessions and showcases for Houston Conf. • Planning 25 sessions for Orlando + Performance Measures Showcase

Lessons Learned • Forums and their Committees are a valuable resource • Developing conference sessions • Generating webinars • Developing position statements • Cross-Cutting Forum generates workshops and webinars • Coordination is a challenge • But creativity must continue • Strategic tasks will provide “glue” and increase CC participation • But ITS-A staff are already doing more with less

  11. CC Key Strategies - 1 • Optimize member value • Engage members thru major events/conferences and USDOT contract • Continue and expand webinars • Use webinar data to plan conference sessions • Involve CC in USDOT contract • Chief advocate for ITS • Technology demonstrations and showcases

  12. CC Key Strategies - 2 • Thought leadership in transportation policy • Collaboration agenda • Eg. Smart grid, research frameworks • White papers • Eg. Designing user interfaces for technologies • Position statements • Eg. Distracted driving • Support for local deployment • Eg. Speakers’ bureau • Improved governance and operations • Increase participation in CC monthly calls

Collaboration: Smart Grid • Electrified vehicles are supported by the utilities industry because they generate new customers, balance the load profile and reduce GHG • IntelliDrive will assist the acceptance and operation of electrified vehicles • Several major issues in common: • Infrastructure deployment • Performance measures • Privacy protocols • Human behavior and the human-machine interface

Coordinating Council in 2011 • Forums to kick off New Year with face to face meetings at TRB • Forums to hold “Open House” meetings welcoming new participants • Planning 25 sessions for Orlando + Performance Measures Showcase • CC will continue to oversee Annual Meeting track of Orlando WC • CC will pursue standards and ITS primer • Wider participation in monthly CC calls – targeted to specific issues

  15. ITS Standards • Initial survey of member needs • Roadmap of ITS standards, going beyond TC 204 • Support for housing TC 204 at ITS-A • No specific committees in current structure
