  1. Liberalism The Art Of Compromise II Timothy 3:16-17

  2. Liberalism Defined • Liberalism- An attitude toward God and His Word which denies divine authority, rejecting the idea of a standard or pattern in religion, in order to do one’s own will, instead of God’s will. • Liberalism leads to compromise. • Psalm 1:1- First a man walks toward compromise, then he is standing in the middle of it, and lastly, he finds himself sitting in it up to his ears.

  3. Four Basic Steps To Compromise • Socializing • Philosophizing • Apologizing • Capitulation

  4. Four Basic Steps To Compromise • Socializing - I Corinthians 15:33. Paul warns us that these kinds of companionships corrupt us. Nehemiah 13:26. • II Chronicles 18:1-3 Affinity- To give a daughter away in marriage (Political move). • II Chronicles 21: 1-6 • II Chronicles 19:1-3 - Jehosophat was rebuked for this agreement. • James 4:4 – The friendship of the world.

  5. continued • Philosophizing - Isaiah 5:20; Proverbs 16:25 • Apologizing - What men once knew to be wrong , they begin to excuse after they are a part of it (Isaiah 55:8,9). • The city of Ashdod – Nehemiah 13:23,24 • Men seldom defend that which they don’t agree with or do not practice. • Capitulation - We should admit the fact that we practice what we once condemned (Galatians 2:12,13).

  6. continued • A person compromises his convictions in his heart before he changes his mind (I John 2:19). • A change of heart leads to questioning everything we ever believed. • Nothing is a shame anymore. We begin to rationalize sin. We give a reason why we see nothing wrong with it, but it is never substantiated with Scripture. • They vacate the old path (Jeremiah 6:16,17)

  7. Once Faith Know Apostate • In his book, Liberalism’s Threat to the Faith, published in the early seventies, by the then faithful, but now apostate Rubel Shelly, he said, “To put it bluntly, liberalism is something altogether different from Biblical Christianity and would destroy it.” Shelly listed six characteristics of liberalism.

  8. Six Characteristics Of Liberalism • Liberalism holds that there is no way to authenticate and prove as true any one version of the Christian faith. • Liberalism rejects the Bible as being the actual Word of God to man. • Liberalism restates the doctrine of Christ to show his utter humanity. • Liberalism denies that the Bible has any inherent moral authority over man.

  9. continued • Liberalism denies that mankind is lost and under the condemnation of sin. • Lastly, liberalism has no concern with the New Testament concept of the church. • Shelly further states: “ Just at this point it should be observed that an individual does not have to subscribe to every tenet of liberalism in order to be a liberal…neither does a preacher, teacher or member of the church have t be a liberal in every possible matter in order to be correctly termed a liberal.”

  10. continued • Bro. Roy Deaver states, “Liberalism believes in God, but not the God of the Bible. Liberalism believes in Christ, but not the Christ of the Bible. Liberalism believes in inspiration, but not in the inspiration the Bible claims for itself. Liberalism believes in “ truth” but not in “truth” as presented by the Bible.”

  11. Striving Against God • Isaiah 45:9 - The folly of opposing God. • Strive - Hebrew (raab) to contend, strive, or quarrel. • To strive against mankind is one thing, but to strive against God is unthinkable. • Genesis 6:5 • Jeremiah 6:16-19 • Isaiah 42:24 • Man never has or never will enter the arena of debate with the Lord and come out victorious. • Jeremiah 6:15; Jeremiah 8:12

  12. When Men Depart From The Standard • Genesis 13:12,13 • Genesis 18:20 - The sin was very grievous. • Genesis 19:4-11- Wickedness • Genesis 19:12-14 - Up to their ears in compromise. • Genesis 19: 23-26 - Total Destruction.

  13. What Caused The Destruction? • God had a standard from the beginning . • Genesis 2: 18-24 - Man and woman. • Leviticus 18:22, 24-26, 29-30 • Leviticus 20:13 • Romans 1:24-27 • Romans 1:25 – Changed (Greek-Matallaso) Exchanging trade - Truth for lies. • Romans 1: 27- Unseemly (in the Greek it means to be deformed)

  14. Truth and Error • Truth and error have no fellowship with one another. • Psalm 119:97-104 • Psalm 119:113 • Psalm 119:128 • Psalm 119:152
