What is Financial Aid? • Financial aid helps you pay for your college education. • The purpose is to help you successfully complete your educational and career goals. • The financial aid process is not as complicated as you think. • Along with the Skyline Career Center, the Financial Aid Office is also here to help you.

  7. Basic premises of financial aid • Students and parents are considered the primary sourcesfor funding a college education and are expected to contribute to the extent they are able • Financial aid measures a family’s ability,not willingness, to pay for a college education

Career Path Option 1: Lawyer • Education Required • Bachelor’s Degree (4-year degree) • Law School Degree (J.D., 3-4 years) • Average total number of years in college = 7 - 8 • Median Salary • Lawyer = $68,000 - $75,000 (depending on location) • Typical Work Schedule • Very demanding • Normally not a regular 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. schedule • Expect to work long hours • 10-12 hour days, 6-7 days a week (no overtime pay)

Alternatives… Career Path Option 2: Paralegal or Legal Secretary/Assistant • Education Required • Associate of Arts Degree (60 semester units) • Certificate (27 semester units) • Average total number of years in college = 1.5 – 2 • Median Salary • Paralegal = $48,000 - $55,000 • Legal Assistant/Secretary = $45,000 - $50,000 • Typical Work Schedule • Normally Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. schedule • During busy periods expect some: • Nights, weekends and holidays may be required (overtime is paid)

Career Path Option 1: Lawyer • B.A./B.S + Law School = $46,500 per year (Public) • 3 year full-time program = $139,500 • B.A./B.S + Law School = $ 48,800 per year (Private) • 3 year full-time program = $146,400 • 4 year part-time program = $126,840 ($31,710 per year) Career Path Option 2: Paralegal or Legal Secretary/Assistant • A.A Degree = $2,700 (California Community College) • Certificate = $1,200 (California Community College) • Above totals are for the Entire Program Please Note: The above numbers are for tuition fees only and represent average estimation amounts. They do not include other cost of living expenses
