  2. Chewing • Chew with your mouthed closed always!

  3. No Noises at the table • Avoid slurping, smacking, burping, blowing your nose, or other gross noises. (If necessary, excuse yourself to take care of whatever it is you need to take care of.)

  4. Using your utensils • Don’t use your utensils like a shovel or as if you’ve just stabbed the food you’re about to eat.

  5. No Picking! • Don’t pick your nose! • Don’t pick your face! • Don’t pick your teeth!

  6. Use your napkin! • Don’t leave your napkin sitting on the table! • As soon as you sit down, place the napkin in your lap.

  7. When you finish • You should NEVER lick your plate!

  8. More “No No’s”! During your meal

  9. What to do with your napkin • Put it in your lap immediately! • If you need to go to the bathroom, you set your napkin to the right of your plate or in the seat of your chair. • When you want to wipe your mouth, you almost dab your mouth. Don’t wipe very hard. • When you are finished eating, you put your napkin to the left of your plate.

  10. Eating and Drinking • Wait until you’re done chewing to sip or swallow a drink. • Cut only one piece of food at a time.

  11. Posture • No slouching and don’t place your elbows on the table while eating • (though it is okay to prop your elbows on the table while conversing between courses.)

  12. Talking during the meal • Never talk when you have food in your mouth. That’s just gross. Even if someone asks you a question, wait until you swallow before answering. • Sometimes in informal settings you can cover your mouth and continue talking

  13. When to eat • When EVERYONE at the table has received their meal, you may begin eating • Sometimes someone will say a prayer before eating, and then you will eat your meal. • Tip: When the host starts eating, you may start eating as well.

  14. Waiters • Waiters are supposed to be polite • Waiters are constantly supposed to check on you (Refill your glass, ask how your meal is, if you need anything) • Never yell to a waiter • If they happened to walk past your table, you tell them “Excuse me” then you can ask what you want

  15. Tipping your waiter • You must at least 15% of meal to the waiter • If you didn’t like the service, you can’t tip less • It’s frowned upon if you don’t leave anything (Some people don’t if they don’t think it was deserved)

  16. Passing things at the table • Instead of reaching across the table for something, ask for it to be passed to you.

  17. “Excuse Me” • Always say ‘excuse me’ whenever you leave the table. • Always say ‘excuse me’ if you want to interrupt a conversation • Always say ‘excuse me’ if you make a dinner etiquette(manners) mistake.
