  10. Case Study - Durham FA • Support over 200 Young Leaders through Football Futures across the County • Work with secondary schools and deploy YL into Charter Standard Clubs and Leagues in a range of roles – including coaching • Deliver 4 day leadership camp each year free to secondary schools

The Background • SGO hub site, SSP structure still in place locally • Leadership, Coaching & Volunteering school • Opportunity to take part in national pilot • Strong Leadership Academy programme • New sixth form on site • CYCA seemed a logical progression for us • Always a demand for more quality coaches

Outcomes • Increase the number of young people becoming coaches • Improve access to and provide high quality training for young coaches at a local level • Create a county mentoring system for young coaches • Increase the number of young people volunteering in school and community sport • Increase opportunities for more young people to participate in sport

Young People Expectations • Knowledge of qualifications, coaching pathways, contacts & what’s out there • Gain qualifications & recognised awards • Develop personal and coaching skills • Increase coaching experience • Guidance & support to become a better coach • Opportunity to learn from others • Help with finding funding for qualifications • Future opportunities/ career, the experience • Make friends and have fun!

The Young Coaches • 8 boys and 13 girls • 15 -17years (9 sixth formers) • Athletics (6), hockey, netball, football (5), tennis (2), basketball, rowing, rock climbing, roller hockey • 13 are members of community clubs • 17 were already coaching • 15 had a Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership • 16 had at least 1 sport specific leadership award • 2 had a level 1 coaching qualification

The Programme • Training Needs Analysis & Goal Setting • Strength & Conditioning –Dynamic Warm Ups • Communication & Organisation Skills • Coaching Seminars • Injury Prevention • Diet & Nutrition • The Coach Athlete Relationship • Signposting to generic coach education courses & sport specific qualifications

The Impact to date…. • 4 coaches have gained a Level 1 qualification & 6 are booked on future courses • Increased workforce for after school clubs, School Games, satellite clubs etc • Improved connectivity with local NGBs & community provision –created a pathway • Opened the door into community sport • Enhanced young peoples personal, social & employability skills

  21. Making a difference to YP “ It has made me aware of the opportunities available in sport coaching which has encouraged me to think further about what I want to achieve through the academy. Liam It has given me some good information on coaching and helped my improvement and future development. Laura The CYCA has helped me to become more organised and able to plan different, exciting sessions for young people. Katie

  22. I have been able to set up my own interform basketball competition and volunteer even more of my time for the extra curricular activities at my school. Amber I have been able to take on board new tips and ideas to help improve my coaching sessions. Sunke The CYCA has provided me with more confidence in my abilities and has given me new ideas which I can use in my coaching sessions. Ellis

  24. Learning so far… • Working with community partners is key • Involve mentors in the first session • Keeping it relevant & purposeful for all young coaches • Age restriction on Level 1 coaching qualifications • Now reviewing county pathway for LCV

  25. Next steps…. • Use this years cohort to shape the programme for next year • Further develop mentoring part of the project • Explore links with HEI • Get feedback from schools, mentors, clubs etc • Ensure long term sustainability • YST intend to roll the programme out wider
