Cost Cost • $35 per student, 78 students = $2,730 • $600 grant from DoT • Total cost to school = $2,130 Rottnest Camp Bike Ed • Two additional classes prior to Year 3 Rottnest camp - cost $1,470. • City of Subiaco Community Development Grant - $808. Parents contributed gap.
Challenges and suggestions Challenges • Not all students had bikes, but were able to borrow some from other classes. • The bike ed classes were run by class teachers in class time – competing for space with PE teachers. Suggestions for others • If students don’t have own bikes they can share bikes or borrow from other classes.
Future plans to run bike ed “I would really like to have Bike Ed as a regular part of the school program for Year 3 and Year 5, and am currently trying to work out ways of funding it without having to go through the rigmarole of constantly applying for grants.”
Student comments We have learnt emergency braking, cornering and how to make daily and monthly checks on our bikes and helmets. We have been joining in activities such as Follow the Leader, Block Out and Looking Behind. We had lots of fun with our trainer, Nick”. -Sophie Cullingford, Jordan Bishop and Jacob Helgeby-Cook. I'm glad we did the bike training last week ,because this morning on the way to school a car pulled out in front of me and I had to do an emergency stop! -Bailey Van Der Zanden, Year 5 I learnt so much this week, and I can do things now that I had never heard of before. -Samuel Harris, Year 5
