CIS: Facts • About 200 students per year graduating with CIS concentration • Highest starting salaries of any undergraduate concentration in business -- by at least a few thousand dollars • Generally strong demand for graduates, although the market has been weaker for the past two years than for the decade before

Systems IS Professional Skills & Knowledge Business Technical CIS: What Is It? • Major emphasis on programming, systems analysis, and implementation • Do you like to work with computers and technology? Do you also like to work with people? Do you like challenging problems? If so, then CIS may be for you!

  4. CIS: Departmental Home • Effective January 2003, a brand-new Information Systems Department was created within the Kelley School of Business, with Professor Anne Massey as the first department chair • The IS Department offers the CIS concentration at the undergraduate level, the MSIS degree (more on this later), and an MIS major in both the M.B.A. and Ph.D. programs

CIS: Growth • The Kelley School of Business now has an outstanding group of fourteen tenure-track faculty members, one clinical faculty member, and four full-time lecturers in information systems • Business 200 was remodeled in the summer of 1998 as a state-of-the-art classroom/laboratory for CIS courses • A new “sand-box” computer laboratory is being created in the summer of 2003 (first floor of the Business Building) for use with CIS courses

CIS: New Courses in 2003! • S208, Business Application Development • A lecture and laboratory programming course, using Visual Basic.NET (required for CIS) • S428, Advanced Application Development • An object-oriented focus, using Java and UML (one of the options for CIS) • S433, Information Systems Security (another option for CIS) • S260, Personal Information Security and the Internet • NOT for CIS students • Intended for students (both inside and outside of the Kelley School) who want and need to know more about security issues in using PCs and the Internet

CIS: 5 Required Courses • S208, Business Application Development • New lecture and laboratory course using Visual Basic.NET • S302, Management Information Systems • Topics include management of IS, decision support systems, geographic information systems, advanced work with Microsoft Access • S305, Business Telecommunications • Topics include local and wide area networks, network hardware and protocols, Internet • Will use the new “sand-box” computer lab • S307, Data Management • Design, development, and management of database systems • S310, Systems Analysis and Design • Covers traditional and new methods of developing information systems

CIS: Career Paths • Corporate Information Systems / Information Technology • Information Systems / Information Technology Consulting • Types of positions: systems analyst, systems programmer, network administrators, database administrators, systems designers, systems managers … maybe, someday, even Chief Information Officer!

  12. Systems IS Professional Skills & Knowledge Business Technical CIS: Career Paths As an IS Professional, you will be designing, building, using, and managing information systems!

CIS and Other Concentrations • A double concentration with CIS and most other concentrations in the School of Business is quite valuable • Because of overlap in requirements, we recommend Accounting or Business Process Management for a double concentration with CIS. In terms of preparing for the Information Technology field, the CIS/BPM combination is an excellent choice!

CIS and Informatics • The new School of Informatics is offering a variety of exciting Informatics programs, such as chemical informatics, bioinformatics, and journalism informatics • CIS is cooperating under the umbrella of the new School of Informatics, but will continue to be a Kelley School of Business degree program • CIS is the “Business Informatics” program at Indiana University!

  15. Something Else New: The MSIS Program • The Kelley School of Business now offers a Master of Science in Information Systems degree program • AND, one option for this program permits a CIS student to earn the MSIS degree in only ONE YEAR beyond the undergraduate degree How does it work? …

The MSIS Program • The CIS student applies and is accepted into the MSIS program in the FALL of his/her senior year. • 6 hours of grad-level coursework is taken in the SPRING • These courses “double-count” for both your undergraduate and graduate programs • A for-credit (and for-pay) IS internship is arranged for the summer between your 4th and 5th years • You get a BS in Business AND an MSIS in just one additional year! • With advanced topics, the 4+1 program will further develop your skills and knowledge and increase your value to recruiters
