Efficient governance toolsrequire: • National data collection & monitoring system • National water documentation center • Well trained and educated professionals • Continuous dialogue between stakeholders • Interface between research and policy • Innovative demonstration projects • Long term scenarios

What EMWIS does? • Online water information services • Capacity building on water information management • Networking of national water authorities • Reinforcing National water data systems in coherence with international standards  Regional water observation mechanism • Working groups  Exchange of know-how, recommendations

Lessons • Large amount of content online • 16 national water websites, international website • Yellow pages, multilingual water thesaurus, projects database (300) • Interest of water information confirmed • 50 000 visits/month • ca 15 000 subscribers to news e-flash • Exchange of experiences between water authorities • Working groups, training, technical visits • Information must be managed at the appropriate level • Needs for • Coordination between international and national programmes • Consolidated water data at national/local levels • Data standardisation and exchange at national level • Stronger involvement of all national stakeholders
