  4. What did Jesus teach? Matthew 5:48 “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

  5. Matthew 5:38-42 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. 6. Judicial Law in the NT 1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore judge (condemn) nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God. 2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:

  7. Matthew 5: 38-42 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Exodus 21:22-25 “…he shall pay as the judges determine. “But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, “burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”Leviticus 24:19-20 ‘If a man causes disfigurement of his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him– ‘fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has caused disfigurement of a man, so shall it be done to him.

  8. Leviticus 19:18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD..

  9. Note: Matthew 7:1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.”Final Judgment 1 Corinthians 2:15 “he who is spiritual judges all things”Discernment We must be careful when we interpret and apply Scripture to a situation, because each passage has a very specific contextto help determine it’s correct application.

  10. Matthew 5: 38-42 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’, “But I tell you not to resist (or stand against) an evil person.”

  11. No Revenge! 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly (insubordinate), comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Romans 12:17a Repay no one evil for evil…

  12. No Revenge! 1 Peter 3:8-9 “Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling (abusive speech) , but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.”

  13. 1 Peter 2:21-24 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness– by whose stripes you were healed.

  14. Do we ever resist evil? Matthew 5: 38-39a “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’, “But I tell you not to resist (or stand against) an evil person.” VS. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. .

  15. 1 Timothy 5:20 Acts 8:20-23 But Peter said to him, “Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. “For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity (sin).” “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.”

  16. Deception Kills!!! 1 Cor 6:9a Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived… 1 Cor15:33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” James 1:15b-16 …sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 1 John 3:7-8a …let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. The one who practices sin of the devil…2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  17. Titus 2:14-15 (Jesus)… gave Himself for us, that He might redeem (set free) us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.

  18. Titus 1:9-11 …holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision (the common error back then), whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.

  19. Jesus Rebukes! Matthew 23:33 “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?”Matthew 16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”Matthew 11:20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent

  20. Galatians 2:11-14 “Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood (anthistemi) him to his face, … I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?” Compare these two passages… Matthew 5:39 “But I say to you, do not resist (anthistemi) an evil person… A time to resist…

  21. What do we Do? Summary: We must turn the other cheek when the offender is not a follower of Jesus, or they have simply stumbled into a sin against us, but we must take a stand against ongoing, unrepentant sin when it is revealed in the church.

  22. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. Psalms 7:11 God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day. Not Optional…

  23. 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but to holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:20 (The Great Commission) “teaching them to keep all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”

  24. Matthew 23:23-24 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. “Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

  25. 1 Corinthians 5:11-13 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner–not even to eat with such a person. For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person”

  26. Matt 18:15-17 & Luke 17:3-4 “Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents (turns from His sin) , forgive him. “And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” .

  27. Revelation 2:20 (This church was rebuked by Jesus because they allowed someone to teach and entice His servants to commit sin) “Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.

  28. 2 John 1:9-11 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

  29. 2 Timothy 2:16-17 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort…

  30. 2 Timothy 2:19 “Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”

  31. Heb 10:26-29, 2 Peter 2:20-22 “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment…” “…it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.”

  32. Matthew 5:39 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

  33. Matthew 26:67-68 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck (rhapizo = slap – as in: if they “slap” you… turn the other cheek) Him with the palms of their hands, saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

  34. Proverbs 24:29 If overlooking a wrong might lead someone away from Hell, overlook it.If overlooking a wrong will lead someone toward Hell, don’t overlook it. And in either case never seek revenge! Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.”

  35. Matthew 5:40 If giving to someone who is trying to take from you might lead them away from Hell, give them what they want.If giving to someone who is trying to take from you might lead them toward Hell, don’t give them what they want. And we still never seek revenge! “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.”

  36. 1 Corinthians 6:7 If overlooking a wrong might lead someone away from Hell, overlook it.If overlooking a wrong will lead someone toward Hell, don’t overlook it. And in either case never seek revenge! “Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated?”

  38. Matthew 5:40 Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether ofsin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 1 Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. …

  39. Matthew 5:40 “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.” Matthew 5:5&7 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.

  40. Proverbs 20:22 “Do not say, “I will recompense (or pay back) evil”; Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.”

  41. Matthew 5:41 If doing something for someone who is trying to compel you might lead them away from Hell, do what they want.If doing something for someone who is trying to compel you might lead them toward Hell, don’t do what they want. And we still never seek revenge! “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.”

  42. Romans 12:18-20 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” (Proverbs 25:21-22) Melt Your Enemies Hard Heart

  43. Matthew 5:42 If giving to someone who asks for something might lead them away from Hell, give them what they want.If giving to someone who asks for something might lead them toward Hell, don’t give them what they want. “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.”

  44. Truth… Colossians 3:5-6 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedienceGalatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  45. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 If giving to someone who asks for something might lead them away from Hell, give them what they want.If giving to someone who asks for something might lead them toward Hell, don’t give them what they want. …we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

  46. Matthew 25:40 “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

  47. Deuteronomy 15:11 “For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother,to your poor and your needy, in your land.’ is the Church!

  48. Psalms 37:25-26 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed.

  49. 1. An “Eye for and Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth” came from the Judicial Law that governed the nation of Israel and it was never meant to justify vengeance. 2. We must forgive and turn the other cheek to the stumbling believer or the deceived unbeliever, but we must take a stand against ongoing unrepentant sin when it is revealed in the church. 3. We must not seek revenge, instead we are to show mercy and pray that the wicked will turn from their wicked ways. 4. We must meekly allow the Lord to dispense final justice, rather than demand it for ourselves. 5. We must be careful with how and when we give, but we should mercifully give to those who are in true need.

  50. Matthew 7:13-16 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
