  3. Step 1 Choose a topic! Glaciers

  4. Step 2 Problem Statement: What are the effects of shape on the melting rate of a glacier? Narrow the topic State the problem statement and objective (what you hope to achieve) Objective: To determine if glacial shape can be used as a factor in determining the melting rate of present day glaciers

  5. Step 3 Write at least 5 research questions about your topic/problem statement PROBLEM: What are the effects of shape on the melting rate of a glacier? How do glaciers form? What are the different types of glaciers? How do glaciers move? How do glaciers erode Earth’s surface? How do solids melt into liquids? What is the melting point of ice and does the value change with altitude? What is global warming and how is it related to melting glaciers?

  6. Step 4 Please cite your references using MLA format….Meow! Prepare a preliminary Bibliography Possible Reference Sources: Internet Books Encyclopedia Journals Expert Interviews Television Programs Newspapers Brochures

  7. Step 5 Prepare a working outline – place the problem statement/thesis statement at the top of the outline • Focus on the problem statement/thesis statement • Divide the subject matter into subheadings – USE YOUR QUESTIONS! • Ask questions about the thesis statement • (who, what, where, when, why, how?) • Ask questions that lead you to the “science” behind your • thesis statement • The research paper summarizes the theory • behind your experiment

  8. Working Outline What are the effects of shape on the melting rate of a glacier? How do glaciers form? How do glaciers move? What are the different types of glaciers? How do glaciers erode Earth’s surface? How do solids melt into liquids? What is the melting point of ice and do the values change with altitude? What is global warming and how is it related to melting glaciers?

  9. Step 6 Take notes from your references/research sources! Keep in mind: Notes should contain statistics, quotations, and information that support the ideas developed in the paper Keep notes on index cards which allow for easy sorting Paraphrase, paraphrase, paraphrase! Did I tell you that you should write your notes in your own words?

  10. Taking notes on index cards • Create a card for each of your References • (Bibliography cards) • Use numbers or letters to code each source Bibliography Card A Louv, R. 2005. Last Child in the Woods. Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Algonquin Books Be sure to take notes in your own words

  11. Taking notes on index cards Notes taken to understand and answer one of the research questions How often do today’s children play outside? A Children do not experience nature in the same way as in the past Kids aware of global threats to environment Kids have reduced their physical contact time with the environment Be sure to take notes in your own words

  12. Step 7 Write a rough draft Keep in mind: The research paper is like a composition/essay in that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion The introduction captures the reader’s attention by stating the thesis clearly and concisely Support your thesis by using the information contained on your note cards The conclusion should summarize the research and restate the thesis. Step 8 Type your final research paper in a size 12 font, Times New Roman, double-spaced
