Embryonic Stem cells have been a large part of today’s science news. • There’s talk about what stem cells can do for the future of human life. • Advancement of human health • There’s also been talk against the use of stem cells because some believe it is unethical • Our group choose the question: How is it possible to obtain embryonic stem cells and is it also possible to obtain adult stem cells? because we did not know much on the subject, so the question seemed very appealing and we wanted to learn more about it. Introduction

  3. Stem Cells are very important cells in the development of a human being. They have an amazing ability to develop into multiple different cell types and they can remain, without a specific function, in the human body. These cells can also regenerate and repair organs at an unlimited rate. The fact that these cells can develop into different cells is over great importance because usually cells are defined into certain joband these are not. What are Stem Cells?

  6. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent cells. Which means they can differentiate themselves into three main germ layers: • Ectoderm • Mesoderm • Endoderm • Embryonic cells come from the inner mass of the blastocyst at about 4-5 days after being fertilized. • At this age these cells are extracted from the embryo using in-vitro, which in fact kills the embryo. • This raises the question of the process being ethical or not. What are embryonic cells? How are they obtained?

  7. Yes! Adult stem cells can be obtained. • They can be found and extracted from tissues of organs and from bone marrow. • Adult stem cells are multipotent cells though. • This means they cannot renew themselves as much as embryonic cells can and are limited in the type of cell they can become, unlike embryonic stem cells. Is it possible to obtain adult stem cells?

Have they tested these cells on humans or animals? • With the use of the cells what potential do humans have of living a longer, healthier life? • With the advances in science of today’s world there are consequences, what are the projected consequences of this research? • Do these consequences stretch further than ethics?
