Cover Letters and Resumes • Know Yourself!- create a document of all of your interests, skills, accomplishments, hobbies, that would be of use or of interest to your employer

Cover letter parts • Your contact info, date, their info, Re: line • Salutation- Who to send it to? • Introductory- state the position, what you are applying for • Main Body- Explain why they should have an interest in you. Match your experience, skills, etc with the appropriate qualifications in your resume and discussing them in detail • Conclusion- describe how you will follow up and how you can be reached. Below include a thank-you for their consideration. Remember to sign your letter • List the documents you have enclosed (references, resume)

Resume • Open the MS word template • Look at examples online • Choose the same job as your cover letter • Make sure it relates to your cover letter • Think about your education, interests, hobbies and stuff that you used in your list earlier.
Resume • Include your contact information at the top • The next thing is to write your objective (the position you are seeking) • Ie. “Seeking an entry-level position as a store clerk”
Next Steps • Education- your current grade, state any awards or academic achievements • Work experience- your past jobs and a description of what you did there. If you don’t have any, discuss volunteer work or home chores. Include dates of employment and accomplishments • Optional info- interests, skills, hobbies, awards, activities
Other Stuff • Sentences don’t have to be complete • Proofread! • Make sure it is consistent and tidy • Use professional language • References available upon request • Make it convincing. Make yourself look good • Don’t make up stuff
References • You will need to find 3 real references • Choose people that are appropriate candidates (previous boss, teacher, group leader, old family friend) • No parents or friends • Include their full name and contact information in another document to be attached to your resume and cover letter.
Report You will make a report on a career of your interest • Have identified a career or job based on your interests and skills and there is a clear relation between them. Include the positives and negatives of the job. (5 marks) • Have identified the education, skills and training needed for that job (2 marks) • Describe what opportunities may stem from this career (1 mark) • Describe the working conditions of the career (1 mark) • Correct spelling and grammar (1 mark)
